The Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science holds annual regional and state competitions. At the regional competition, students present their projects to judges, who score each individual. 1st Place scores qualify for the state competition, where they travel to Pennsylvania State University (if possible) and present their projects again to judges and receive scores.
General Information:
Each participant registers to participate in one of the following categories: Biochemistry, Behavioral/Psychology, Biology (general), Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Ecology, Earth and Space, Engineering, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics, and Zoology.
Presentations must be under 10 minutes and include a powerpoint.
Participants are scored on a 1-5 scale. Scores of 4 and above are 1st place, and scores below are 2nd place. So, there can be multiple 1st place awards.
The regional competition is usually in February, and the state competition is usually in May.
