5I - Flowers
5R - Geometric Shapes
5D - Waves
Sketch designs on paper. Mark out or draw in the design where the 5 techniques will be applied.
Materials: A4 paper with 2 10cm x 10cm templates; pupil's own pencils and erasers.
LESSON 2: PERSONAL ARTWORK - Techniques Exploration
SAFETY GUIDE AND METAL SHEET PREPARATION
Watch video on safety and how to tape up edges of metal sheet. Tape up the edges with masking tape.
Draw the design on the metal and create their first artwork with all 5 metal tooling techniques.
REMINDER TO ARTISTS: Do not make holes on the metal. It is sharp and you can get cut.
Challenge: Create your metal artwork with no holes.
Materials:
Sketches made on A4 paper with 2 10cm x 10cm templates; pupil's own pencils and erasers.
Inkless ballpoint pen
Copper sheets (10cm x 10cm)
Masking tape
Wooden stylus
Ice-cream stick
LESSON 3: GROUP ARTWORK - BRAINSTORM THEME
Finish personal techniques artwork (30 minutes)
Introduce group artwork plan. Brainstorm with class on selecting a theme.
Artists to propose theme ideas considering the limitations of metal tooling, feasibility, relevance and if the theme is suitable for a group project.
Trainer to show how to select or search for images to reference that will be suitable for metal tooling. Eg. use icons and line drawings instead of photos.
Students to sketch images they like from the research session.
Design on template sheet provided with 10x10cm square marked out.
Materials: A4 paper with 2 10cm x 10cm templates; pupil's own pencils and erasers.
5P - Space
5I - Cartoon
5R - Tropical
5D - Sports ?
LESSON 4 & 5: GROUP ARTWORK - TRANSFER TO METAL
Distribute 2nd metal piece for artists to tape up the edges with masking tape. Name and indicate class and index number.
Tape the edges with a thin border 0.1-0.2cm.
Tape their cut out drawing on top of the taped up metal piece. Draw their designs with a inkless pen to engrave on the metal.
Materials:
Sketches made on A4 paper with 2 10cm x 10cm templates; pupil's own pencils and erasers.
Copper sheets (10cm x 10cm)
Masking tape
Wooden stylus
Ice-cream stick
LESSON 6: GROUP ARTWORK - MAKE PAPER FRAMES
Artists to do final touch-ups to finish the group metal tooling artwork
Remove tape border (if not applied neatly).
Watch how-to video to mount metal artwork with coloured square scrapbook papers provided. Artist to choose a design that matches best with their metal artwork or theme.
Recap programme highlights and learning takeaways.
Get feedback on how to improve the course.
Materials:
Completed copper artwork (10cm x 10cm)
Masking tape
Scrapbook printed paper
Lesson 1:
- Introduction to repousse - metal tooling
Repoussé: It is a method of metal tooling art where the metal is pushed forward to create patterns and designs.
Repousse is a word derived from the French meaning, "driven back", that is to say, it is a decoration of metal by means of driving back parts of that metal and raising others so that the design stands out in relief.
Chasing: Pushing the metal to make the design protrude forward.
- Get inspired (Slideshow below. More at Artist Inspiration link)
Local artist inspiration
International artist inspiration
Distribute template sheet. Pupils to fill in name, # and class.
Fill in reflection: "What did you learn or remember from the inspirational artists? What surprised you?"
3. Learn the basic techniques of repousse - to be able to start thinking of their designs
LESSON 2:
Recap 5 metal tooling techniques:
Engraving
Embossing (low relief)
High Relief
Ridged
Bumpy
Sketch design on template sheet provided with 10x10cm square marked out.
Indicate in the sketch which technique to be used.
SAFETY GUIDE AND METAL SHEET PREPARATION (if time permits)
Watch video on safety and how to tape up edges of metal sheet. Tape up the edges with masking tape.
Materials:
Sketches made on A4 paper with 2 10cm x 10cm templates; pupil's own pencils and erasers.
Copper sheets (10cm x 10cm)
Masking tape
Wooden stylus
Ice-cream stick
Safety First:
Tape the Edges: The edges will cut you. Please do not be curious and test it out.
Follow the video below to create a 0.5cm border to cover the sharp edges.
Lesson 6: MAKING THE FRAME FOR THE METAL ARTWORK
Choose as a class to use patterned paper or plain cardstock.
Once you finish mounting your metal artwork, hand in your framed artwork to your teacher.
Do a class walk through to see the finished artwork.
Reflect and Share:
What did you like and learn about metal tooling?
What was easy and hard in metal tooling?
Did you like learning how to brainstorm as a class and choosing a theme and secret icon?
How can Ms Wee improve the programme next time?
