Was inspired by a Metal Slug artbook I got recently. I wanted to make everything in the book wink but decided to go with the Dragon Nouske Boss from MS2. The goal was to do a isometric style piece in the vein of the upcoming Metal Slug tactics but with my own twist. I wanted to introduce some motion into the scene as isometric tactics games tend to be very static. I find one can learn so much from pixel art especially if you are getting into stylized 3d stuff. From the trailer, fans can see that the gameplay style of "Metal Slug Tactics" is instantly recognizable, even if it is new for the series. The top-down perspective, often seen in tactics games like "XCOM," allows a player to view the entire field o battle. The maps glimpsed in this trailer feature many of the same types of enemies and bearded hostages that players will recognize from previous games.

Sure, the Metal Slug experience is now slower, but all the style remains, from the goofy character design to the exaggerated death animations. Plus there are still fat tanks and boss fights, only now everything is turn-based tactics instead of fast-twitch action, and it all looks cool as hell.

While Metal Slug Tactics is certainly not a mainline entry in the series, it sports an art style in its reveal trailer that recalls those classic games and adds in a new style of gameplay that fits in with the arcade-y combat the franchise is known for. Combat will be a light tactics experience in the vein of XCOM, but there's also a roguelike element that procedurally generates mission layouts for maximum replayability. Iconic bosses from past Metal Slug games will challenge the player alongside their massive armies, and the team will have to use every firearm, vehicle, and grenade available to take them down.

The surprise reveal of Metal Slug Tactics is a joyous one for anyone who remembers playing through the game in arcades fondly. It also just goes to show how versatile the XCOM formula has proven itself. With Gears of War already successfully translating to tactics and a rumored game in the style featuring Marvel heroes in the works, it's a new way for established universes to both reach a brand-new audience and present a new side story for dedicated fans. This isn't to say that Metal Slug Tactics will be definitely delving into any deep lore, but this over-the-top gameplay should translate perfectly to turn-based strategy in the hopefully near future.

Metal Slug Tactics was a lovely surprise when first announced back at E3 2021. The sidescrolling run-and-gun series didn't seem to have a tactics game in it, but it turns out it does, and Leikir Studio is really leaning into what makes the Metal Slug games special: the art style. 2351a5e196
