META ISLAND PROJECT
international architecture ideas competition
international architecture ideas competition
The competition's target location is an island facing Hwahwa Island located in Hwajung-myeon, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do, South Korea (as shown in the picture below and in the digital space).
Sanghwado is situated at 127°49' E and 34°28' N, 1 km southeast of Sanghwado and 22 km southwest of Yeosu. It has an area of 0.71 km² and a coastline length of 6.4 km. The geology of the island consists mostly of neutral volcanic rocks, and its terrain is relatively gentle, with a maximum height of 118 m. The coastline is mostly rocky, with steep slopes on the southern coast and areas with well-developed wave erosion. The average temperature in January is 2.1℃, in August it is 24.7℃, and the annual rainfall is 1,247 mm. As of 2009, the island had a population of 85 people (42 men and 43 women) living in 34 households.
The village is centered around the pier located at the entrance of the bay on the north coast. The land use is mainly farming, with 0.29 km² of farmland and 0.41 km² of forest. The residents mostly engage in farming and fishing, and the main agricultural products are barley for beer and sweet potatoes, with small amounts of radishes, beans, and garlic. Anchovy, eel, and squid are caught in the nearby waters, and seaweed is also cultivated. Regular passenger ships operate from Yeosu Jungang-dong Passenger Terminal and Baekya Port in Hwajung-myeon.
On the other hand, Sanghwado is relatively unknown and has little information for tourists. The reason for selecting Sanghwado as the target location for this metaverse competition is to encourage applicants to use their imagination and come up with various content and ideas in a situation where there is little information available.
This international architecture landmark design competition invites not only students and young professionals in architecture but also those interested in digital content to develop and submit appealing ideas for a landmark design. The focus of this competition is on the island of Sanghwado located in Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. Sanghwado faces Hwahwado Island and is known as "Flower Island" for its beautiful fields of wildflowers, although it was once called "Sodo" due to its resemblance to a cow's head. The vision for each design proposal should emphasize, respect, and commemorate the site while providing a unique and memorable experience for visitors to the landmark located in such a picturesque location.
South Korea is one of the few archipelagic countries in the world, with the city of Yeosu boasting 354 islands, 255 of which are uninhabited. The Meta Island Project aims to create a virtual twin of these uninhabited islands within a virtual space, in order to attract visitors to these islands and ultimately increase offline tourism to turn these uninhabited islands into popular destinations.
Currently, the Meta Island Project is seeking unique stories about the islands of Yeosu, which will be constructed as virtual spaces using scanning technology.
Participants in this competition can create meta-architectural spaces within these virtual platforms, similar to drawing on a blank canvas. Content will be applied to this metaverse space and shared with Yeosu citizens and users worldwide.
This project is differentiated from other metaverse spaces by three main characteristics. Firstly, it integrates digital twin technology by mirroring real-world topography. Secondly, it has a unique story structure, discovering unique stories for each of Yeosu's islands. This competition is the first step in finding such stories. Thirdly, each island will serve as a teleportation gateway using gateways to connect other islands and act as a cluster hub. This technology implementation will be made possible by several expert teams. Yeosu Island will become a portal for teleportation to the world. The goal of this metaverse cluster is to expand the project to connect the world through islands.
Meta Island Project:
• Content: Sketches of landmark buildings, sculptures, and architectural structures within the island, along with detailed descriptions and reasons behind the design choices. Also, how the design is connected to Sanghwado Island and the overall design of Meta Island.
• Submission Format: A1-sized digital panel submission (with a flexible internal structure, including concept and explanations of the design)
• The team composition can be a mix of 2-4 individuals (regardless of nationality) or a single individual can submit as well.
※ Note (Important) : Award winners will be requested to provide and submit their own modeling fbx files.
<Scoring Criteria>
Landmark Characteristics (30)
The purpose of the Meta Island Project is to prevent the uninhabitation of the island and increase visitors by creating landmark buildings, sculptures, and various structures. Therefore, the submission should include a specific and distinctive design that can become a landmark.
Architectural Form (40)
The design should reflect architectural expression.
Creativity and Originality (20)
Innovative and unique ideas, and a design that hasn't existed before.
NOTE:
The design proposal should focus on creative design ideas, taking into account the unique characteristics of the island location, including its history, culture, and geographic features. Additionally, the design ideas should be environmentally friendly and implementable in a sustainable manner.
In accordance with the international competition guidelines, the judging committee will select three internal, two external, and two international members to evaluate the project.
