Messenger Lite APK Free Download Latest Version For Android  ( 2026 )

Messenger Lite is a discontinued Android messaging app made by Meta. Meta removed it from Google Play in 2023 and told users to switch to Messenger or Facebook Lite. The last version is 338.0.0.3.102, about 15 MB, for Android 4.0 and higher. Old copies of the APK are still online, but sites that host them report that the app now redirects users to other Meta apps instead of working on its own.

What is Messenger Lite?

Messenger Lite was a stripped-down version of Facebook Messenger. Meta, then still called Facebook, launched it for Android in 2016 for phones with limited storage and processing power. It kept the core of Messenger and left out extras such as stories, games and extensions.

The app was built for people on weak connections and low-cost phones. It was designed to work on 2G networks and to use less mobile data than the full Messenger app. Data.ai estimated that the Lite versions of Meta's apps had around 760 million combined downloads, with India, Brazil and Indonesia as the biggest markets.

Why you can't find Messenger Lite on Google Play

Meta confirmed the shutdown to TechCrunch in August 2023. From August 21, people using the app were directed to Messenger or Facebook Lite. The app was already gone from Google Play for new users, and it became inaccessible for existing users after September 18, 2023. The iOS version had been closed earlier, in 2020.

Meta has not given a public reason. Android Central pointed out that most Android phones now have enough power to run the main Messenger app, which may be part of the thinking.

Does Messenger Lite still work in 2026?

Most likely not as a normal messenger. Uptodown states on its listing that the app is no longer operational and probably will not work as intended. Softonic reports that when the APK is opened, it links to Facebook Lite or Messenger instead. Meta also stopped releasing updates, so the app receives no security patches.

If your goal is simply to keep chatting from a basic phone, the working options are listed further down this page.

File: com.facebook.mlite, version 338.0.0.3.102, about 15 MB

Read the points below before you install. Because the app is discontinued, treat this file as an archive copy and not as a working product.

How to install the APK on Android

1. Download the file to your phone.

2. Open your phone's settings and allow installs from unknown sources for the browser or file manager you used. On newer Android versions this is under Apps, then Special access, then Install unknown apps.

3. Open the downloaded file and tap Install.

4. Turn the unknown sources permission off again once the install finishes.

5. Open the app. If it sends you to Messenger or Facebook Lite, the old service is no longer available and you will need one of those apps.

How to check that an APK file is safe

APK sites are not all equal, and a changed file can carry malware or steal login details. Before you install any copy:

• Compare the file's SHA-256 hash with the one published on this page. If the values differ, delete the file.

• Download only an unmodified file. Avoid anything labelled mod, plus, gold or unlocked.

• Run a Google Play Protect scan after installing.

• Do not enter your Facebook password into an app you cannot verify.

• Check the permissions list. One listing shows the app asking for 40 permissions, which is a lot for a basic chat app.

Best alternatives for older phones and weak networks

• Messenger: The official replacement, with the full feature set. It needs more storage and a newer phone than the Lite app did.

• Facebook Lite: Includes chat, so you do not need a separate Messenger app. Meta points former Messenger Lite users to it.

• imo Lite, Telegram and WhatsApp: Widely used messengers that people choose when their contacts are not on Messenger. Check the current size and Android requirements on Google Play before you pick one, since these change with updates.
