A 12 Month Gardening Curriculum for low- income/ethnic/marginalized communities and the organizations that serve them

Provides instructions for gardening year round in all growing zones.    

The Mentor the Garden Mentor© gardening curriculum is a comprehensive instructional guide that covers gardening topics from seed selection to preserving food. It contains useful, monthly, step-by-step gardening information such as; seed selection, pollinators, garden pests, organic garden pest control, permaculture, composting and more. The curriculum is divided into 12 units and coincides with 12 months in a calendar year and can be used in any growing zone with modifications.  

The Units are: 

1. Ordering seed catalogs online and seed selection

2. Packaging seeds and understanding planting instructions 

3. Starting seeds indoors and understanding planting instructions 

4.  Building the garden bed 

5.  Planting the garden bed

6.  Building the compost bin and rain barrel (included in this chapter is a step-by step illustrated guide for the rain barrel) 

7. Harvesting early season vegetables, weeding, reseeding, attracting pollinators and minimizing pests 

8.  Harvesting, garden maintenance and preparing for cooler temperatures

9.  Harvesting, bartering and seed saving 

10. Canning and freezing; preserving the harvest

11. Putting the garden to rest in colder climates and replenishing/replanting the garden in warmer climates

12. Reflection and celebration
