Focus & Variations
"Get out of my House !" is a maths game by Michael Ymer that aims at encouraging the development of mental addition and subtraction strategies across early years of schooling. It allows students to progress through the four progression phases of emerging, developing, broadening and extending according to the level of difficulty chosen.
For early learners, the game board can be reduced to 1-12, while more advanced students could be challenged using more than 2 dice as number range on houses increases between 1-20 to 1-40.

Material :
1 game board
2-3 dice (6-10 sided will work)
7 coloured counters per player
Players take turn rolling two dice, and choose to add or subtract the numbers on the dice to make an answer. They place on their counter on the house with that number.
If the house is already occupied, they say "Get out of my house !", return the counter to the other player and put their own on the space.
The objective is to get all 7 counters on the board before the other player.

Motivates students to work out solutions in their head in order to solve simple addition or subtraction problems using a range of different mathematical strategies
Encourages children to consider and choose combinations in order to obtain a number that will allow them to put a counter on the house with that same number. For example, if they get 2 and 6, they can either choose to put their counter on house number 8 (2+6) or number 4 (6-2).
As students can be put into teams to play this game, they are encouraged to work together and share ideas in order to solve addition or subtraction problems as they take turns rolling the dice. This would not only encourage them to actively engage with each other, but also promote discussion of mental strategies amongst students.
Creativity ?
As mentioned above, this game promotes creativity by encouraging students to consider different strategies in order to add or subtract two numbers together in order to be able to put a counter on a house with the same number they have found.
