The Winterslow Men’s Shed was formed with the help and encouragement of Winterslow Parish Council and meets on a Thursday morning from 9.30 to 12.00 in the Pavilion on the recreation ground opposite the Primary School. Our Shed is a member of the UK Men's Shed Association (UKMSA).
Our first meeting was held in January 2023 with six regular members, since then the group has grown to thirteen 'Shedders' at present. We are a friendly group of mostly retired professionals from different walks of life: Engineers (agricultural, mechanical, electrical), teachers, accountants, mechanics and some serious painters & decorators). One of our Shedders is also a qualified Mental Health First Aider.
One of the major purposes of Men's Sheds is to provide opportunities for people to improve their mental wellbeing and reduce loneliness and/or social isolation. The UK Men's Shed Association puts it like this:
"Men’s Sheds (or Sheds) are similar to garden sheds – a place to pursue practical interests at leisure, to practice skills and enjoy making and mending. The difference is that garden sheds and their activities are often solitary in nature while Men’s Sheds are the opposite. They’re about social connections and friendship building, sharing skills and knowledge, and of course a lot of laughter."
