We have estimated that the carbon footprint of those participants flying to our workshop is 38.8t. Although we are excited that each of you has travelled to join us this week, we do regret this number---for reference, the annual carbon footprint of an average American adult is around 20t. We are working to limit our environmental impact in other ways.
Please consider donating money to an environmental agency to offset your flight. It may be less money than you were expecting: for example, according to one moderately reputable carbon-offset calculator, it could take only $17 to offset a round-trip flight from Boston to Champaign---the precise amount depends on the project your money goes towards. There are many agencies that do carbon-offsetting; two to consider are Gold Standard (which has a variety of projects you can choose to support) and Cool Earth (which works to preserve rainforests).
In order to reduce paper waste, we will not print copies of the schedule, local information, etc. This is all available on our website, and internet is available at all conference venues (see below). If you need a paper copy of certain information and you are not able to print it yourself before arriving in Champaign, please contact one of the organizers and we will print the necessary pages for you.
We will have no disposable plastic water bottles at the workshop. Altgeld Hall has many excellent water fountains (excellence measured in terms of temperature and water pressure), several conveniently located outside each of the lecture rooms. If you like to drink water during the talks, please consider bringing a reusable bottle or cup.
Please consider bringing a reusable cup for coffee and/or juice. There are kitchen facilities available so you can easily wash your cup and use it for many beverages. There will be paper cups available for those who don't have their own reusable cups; please label your cup with the provided marking pens so that you can reuse it at least a few times.
There are two main options:
UIUC has eduroam.
You can create a guest account on IllinoisNet. Connect to IllinoisNet_Guest, and follow the instructions to create an account for yourself. You will have to repeat this process every 24 hours.
 details to be confirmed.
Champaign--Urbana is not a very large place, so it will be easy for you to get around.
If you are not in a rush and it is not raining too hard, your destination is probably in walking distance. For example, it is about 10--15 minutes to walk from the Hampton Inn to Altgeld Hall.
There are dockless bikes in CU, which you can rent on a half-hour basis. To use them, you will need a smartphone with the Veoride App.
The public transit is very good, and costs only one dollar. In particular, there are frequent buses that will take you about half of the distance to the hotel: these are the Red, Brown, Yellow, and Blue routes. Check Google maps for more information, or ask an organizer or local participant.
