Indian Institute of Technology - Roorkee is among the foremost of institutes of national importance in higher technological education and in engineering, basic and applied research. Since its establishment, the Institute has played a vital role in providing the country with technical manpower and know-how in pursuit of research. The Institute ranks amongst the best technological institutions in the world and has contributed to all sectors of technological development. It has also been considered a trendsetter in the area of education and research in the field of science, technology, and engineering.

The Institute had celebrated its Sesquicentennial in October 1996 and now completed more than 175 years of its existence. It was converted to IIT on September 21, 2001 by an Ordinance issued by the Government of India declared it as the nation’s seventh Indian Institute of Technology, an “Institution of National Importance”.

The Institute offers Bachelor's Degree courses in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and Postgraduate Degrees in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture and planning. The Institute has a facility for doctoral work in all Departments and Research Centres.

Background about MemSci-Brine 2024

Objectives

The desalination sector plays a vital role in supplying dry regions and places with restricted access to conventional water sources with clean water. However, there are serious environmental problems associated with the byproduct's manufacturing, brine. Because conventional brine disposal techniques are not sustainable, brine management and repurposing require creative solutions. The most recent developments in membrane technologies as well as other cutting-edge techniques for turning brine from a waste product into useful resources will be the main topics of this international workshop “MemSci-Brine”.

Expected outcomes of the workshop

The expected outcomes of the program are

Proposed programs

The MemSci-Brine 2024 workshop will have the following programs:

A. Lectures: The program will include a series of lectures led by experienced resource experts. These lectures will give participants a comprehensive overview of the latest membrane-based technologies and tools and their application in water, desalination, energy, and healthcare. Through the lectures, participants will gain a deep understanding of the critical concepts and theories related to membrane technologies. The interactive lectures will allow participants to ask questions and engage with the material meaningfully.

B. Hands-on tutorials and practicals: Apart from classroom lectures, there will be exposure to membrane fabrication, characterization, autopsy techniques, and different applications.

C. Discussion sessions: There will be in-depth discussion among participants, researchers and industry representatives to address

D. Minor projects and presentations: Participants will have the opportunity to do small projects and present their results with the rest of the group. The presentations will cover a wide range of topics. This will provide a platform for sharing knowledge and ideas and foster collaboration and networking among workshop attendees.

Eligibility and selection

Motivated students currently pursuing their Post-graduate or Doctorate research and early career academicians in the specialization of Civil / Environmental / Chemical Engineering and interdisciplinary areas like Polymer Technology, Desalination, and Water Management from reputed Institutions / Universities of India and abroad. Further, there will be the participation of relevant membrane-based industries. The candidates would be selected based on criteria decided by the committee.
