Iron Heart of Hope is a community-based initiative and emerging NGO supporting families of missing Ukrainian servicemen through memory, psychological support, and community resilience.

The "Iron Heart of Hope" memorial, located on the sacred grounds of the Pluzhne Orthodox Church—a place of solace and spiritual peace—is far more than an art installation. It is a tangible embodiment of the grief that weighs heavily on the souls of Ukrainians, while simultaneously standing as a testament to unshakeable hope. The installation is dedicated to every soldier and every civilian whose stories were abruptly cut short and whose voices were silenced by a ruthless war. Their fates, hopes, and dreams are not lost, even if their whereabouts remain currently unknown.
Each element of the "Iron Heart of Hope" installation carries a deep symbolic meaning, reflecting the agony of war and the indomitable strength of the spirit:
The Base: Trials of Peace and Freedom What was once a sturdy concrete pillar symbolized stability and peaceful days. Now, encased in a coarse iron mesh, it represents the restrictions, captivity, and lost freedom resulting from a brutal invasion. The sharp barbed wire wrapped around the pillar symbolizes the pain, suffering, imprisonment, and danger that our missing and captive heroes face every day.
Sprouts of Life: Indomitable Will and Hope Even through this rigid mesh, despite all obstacles and pain, life breaks through—tender green ears of grain. These fragile sprouts reaching toward the light are a powerful symbol of the unbreakable will to live, faith in the future, and hope for rebirth and return. They remind us that even in the darkest times, through pain and despair, hope grows, memory lives, and the longing for freedom never fades.
The Steel Plate: The Wounds of War Resting heavily upon the pillar is a steel plate, ruthlessly riddled with bullet holes. Each hole is an unhealed wound, a silent scream against the violence that has consumed thousands of lives and left incurable scars on our souls. This plate symbolizes the cruelty of war and its indiscriminate destruction, which leaves no one unscathed.
The Broken Heart: The Pain of Wounded Ukraine A massive iron heart, once whole and filled with love, now stands broken with a deep, open wound. It reflects the searing despair felt across our wounded Ukraine. This shattered heart symbolizes not only the pain of those left behind but also the torn families and communities, the familiar worlds destroyed by war, and the buried hopes and unfulfilled dreams.
The Dove of Peace: Shackled Freedom and Faith in Return Atop this fractured heart, a dove—the eternal symbol of peace—has spread its wings. But now, it is shackled by heavy chains and blindfolded. This dove symbolizes the brave sons and daughters of Ukraine who are missing or in captivity, whose fates remain unknown. The chains represent their forced detention and stolen freedom. The blindfold signifies not only the terrifying uncertainty that clouds their existence but also our blind faith in justice and their inevitable return.
The world continues its relentless pace. Life, on the surface, goes on. But for the families of the missing, time has cruelly stopped. They live in the eerie shadow of the unknown, in an exhausting and infinite state of waiting. They have no graves to visit, no memorial stones, and no designated place to gather on the painful anniversaries of disappearance or on ordinary days to pray quietly for the swift return of their loved ones.
This installation, standing majestically here on this holy ground, is our collective prayer. A prayer for their safe return home, a prayer for inexhaustible strength and resilience for their grieving families, and a sincere prayer that their bright memory will forever be preserved in our grateful hearts.
For hope, as it is wisely said, is the strongest prayer. And we hold fast to this unwavering hope, even in the darkest of times.
