Membership Agreement – Rules & Policies
These rules and policies are established to ensure a safe, respectful, and productive training environment for all members of Japan Karatedo Mikuukai.
All members must show respect to instructors, fellow students, the dojo, and equipment at all times.
Punctuality is required. Late arrivals and early departures are generally not permitted unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor.
Unsafe, aggressive, or violent behaviour will result in appropriate disciplinary action. Repeated or serious misconduct may lead to suspension or termination of membership.
Japan Karatedo Mikuukai is not a childcare service. Students must be able to participate in training independently and follow the instructor's directions.
The primary purpose of training is to learn and develop Karatedo.
Karatedo involves physical activity and contact, and there is an inherent risk of injury.
Parental involvement and cooperation are welcome and valued. However, parents and guardians must respect the professional judgement of the instructor. Complaints or disputes concerning grading outcomes, disciplinary decisions, or instructional methods will be addressed at the discretion of the head instructor. All decisions are based on safety, skill, attitude, conduct, and individual readiness.
All jewellery must be removed before training to reduce the risk of injury.
Students are expected to attend training regularly and maintain consistent participation.
Students and parents/guardians should notify the dojo in advance if they are unable to attend.
Training schedules may be adjusted due to school events, venue availability, instructor availability, or other dojo-related requirements.
Regular attendance is important for skill development, safety, and readiness for grading or competition.
Students are expected to practise outside regular classes and take responsibility for their own progress.
Proper manners, discipline, cooperation, and behaviour are essential parts of training and will be consistently reinforced.
Training is primarily non-contact at beginner levels. Contact-based training may be introduced progressively at more advanced levels, according to the student's ability, readiness, and safety requirements.
Students must follow the instructor's directions and must not use techniques learned in the dojo to intimidate, bully, or harm others.
Students who require glasses may wear them during general training. Glasses must be removed during kumite (sparring) due to the risk of injury. Appropriate alternatives should be discussed with the instructor if necessary.
All students must wear the official Mikuukai uniform purchased through the dojo.
Uniforms must be kept clean and in good condition, and clearly labelled with the student's name.
Students must be able to put on their uniform and tie their own belt independently before they are eligible for grading.
Lost belts require a ¥3,000 reissue fee.
Belts must not be washed. Belts must be returned when a replacement is issued due to a grade change or when membership ends, where applicable.
Hair regulation: Hair that falls in front of the face and extends below eyebrow level must be tied back or secured with flat hairpins. This applies to all students, regardless of gender, and is intended to prevent injuries caused by obstructed vision.
Students may wear suitable short-sleeved shirts or short-legged garments under their uniforms. However, additional clothing may contribute to overheating, particularly during warmer weather. Students and parents/guardians must ensure that clothing is appropriate for the conditions.
Students are responsible for bringing any additional equipment required for specific training sessions, examinations, or competitions.
First-year membership fee: ¥15,000, including the official uniform, fist protectors, and sports insurance.
Annual registration fee from the second year: ¥5,000, payable each March.
Monthly training fees are charged separately according to the membership category and the current fee schedule provided by the dojo.
All fees already paid are non-refundable, except where a refund is required by applicable law or expressly approved by the dojo.
Fees are subject to change. Members will be notified of any changes.
Members are responsible for paying fees by the designated deadlines.
Grading examinations are generally held at least twice a year, subject to the dojo's schedule.
Students must demonstrate the required technical ability, knowledge, attitude, conduct, and readiness before attempting a grading.
Grading examinations are not compulsory. Students should consider their readiness and confidence before applying. The instructor may provide guidance on readiness and eligibility.
Grading fees vary according to the level being attempted. Certificates are awarded to students who pass.
Feedback sheets will be provided after grading to support reflection and identify areas for improvement.
Students who do not pass may attempt the grading again at a subsequent examination. Where applicable, only the examination fee will be charged for the retest.
Regular attendance alone does not guarantee readiness or success. Students are expected to practise independently and work on the areas identified by the instructor.
Grading decisions are based on the student's performance and readiness at the time of examination.
Participation in at least one training camp or seminar each year is strongly encouraged as an opportunity for further development.
Camps and seminars are generally conducted in Japanese and may be held jointly with other dojos or organisations.
Registration must be completed using the designated Google Form or other method specified by the dojo.
Members and parents/guardians are responsible for checking event details, registration deadlines, fees, equipment requirements, and any other instructions provided.
Generally, approximately three competitions are held each year. Participation is voluntary, but students are encouraged to compete because competitions provide valuable experience, opportunities to test their skills, learn from others, and improve their Karatedo.
Once a student registers for a competition, they are expected to attend the designated competition-specific training sessions.
Competition-specific training is an important part of preparation. Registered students are expected to make every reasonable effort to attend all scheduled sessions. If a student cannot attend, the instructor must be notified in advance.
Students are responsible for obtaining and bringing all equipment required for their registered events. This includes the appropriate uniform, protective equipment, and any other items specified by the dojo or competition organisers.
Students must follow competition rules, safety requirements, instructions from instructors, and directions from competition officials.
Students must demonstrate appropriate behaviour, respect for opponents and officials, and good sportsmanship before, during, and after competitions.
Registration does not guarantee participation in every event or continued participation. The instructor may restrict or withdraw a student's participation if safety, preparation, attendance, conduct, or competition requirements are not adequately met.
Competition results are only one measure of development. The dojo values effort, learning, sportsmanship, and continuous improvement alongside performance.
