The garden holds semiannual work parties that require your help and contribution! Maintenance is important, and this is where most of it happens. Come out on a nice weekend with gloves (tools too, though there are tools provided), water, and food (potluck), and join everyone for a morning of gardening, weeding, trimming, etc. It is all capped off with a Potluck!
The next work party is:
Sunday, the 11th of June, 2023 9am-2 pm [6/11/2023]

The Melrose Detroit Botanical Garden (MDBG) is a fully community managed space for the enjoyment and benefit of the neighborhood. The garden offers a variety of plants, flowers, and visiting birds, while creating a peaceful space to garden, relax, and enjoy the views. The garden contains mulched pathways and two benches to enjoy the view of the Excelsior and San Bruno Mountain.
The Garden would appreciate your help in maintenance. Scroll down to learn more!

The garden began as a empty lot that attracted dumping, weeds, and grasses. 25+ years ago neighbors rallied to turn the space into the hidden gem that it is today, and have work hard in collaboration and community ever since to maintain and improve the space.
Notes:
Compost bins: plant matter only. Eggshells + some foods okay, as long as properly buried as to not attract animals. No proteins, bones or meat based compost. The industrial city composting is made for that. Plants like ivy, which can easily root and live through the composting process are not allowed.
If you're interested in doing your own gardening, please contact the lead stewards. This is not a 'plot/allotted garden space', but if you have something in mind, consult a steward. We also want to avoid mistakenly cut down plants, etc.
Dogs: Leashed, TOILET your dogs in YOUR OWN YARD. Teach them to use a space that's not a community garden, like your yard. Kids play here, people work with their hands, so allowing urine or feces in the garden is unsafe and disrespectful. Please, do the simplest part in the community to keep it nice and clean so others do not have to clean up after you.
No dumping: cigarettes, alcohol bottles and cans, plastic easter eggs, nerf darts, etc.
Graffiti and Vandalism: this just means someone will have to fix or repaint the bench
Visiting: please be respectful of the neighborhood. The garden is within a residential neighborhood, in close proximity to houses. We request visitors visit at reasonable hours, keep noise levels down, and not use the space to use as a social space for recreational substances.
The garden is impassible*. Access is only available via Melrose, and not thru down Detroit. A current effort to make the space passable for pedestrians is in progress.
