Global Learning courses are cornerstones of the Global Learning program. Throughout these courses, I have expanded my perspectives and been exposed to global problems and solutions.
GL Courses:
CPO 3055 Authoritarians and Democrats
This course explored different authoritarian and democratic regimes, with a heavy focus on how nuance governance can be. It exposed me to different types of Authoritarianism, mainly how it can instill itself into governments like Papa Doc's Haiti, or how it can creep into democratic systems like in Lyndon B. Johnson's government. This course taught me that governance is not black and white and we must always be mindful of our practices to maintain a healthy democracy.
INR 3081 Contem Intl Probs
This class went over problems facing international society today. It was foundational for my work as an international relations student because it taught me vocabulary and exposed me to impending problems that we face. For example, establishment of international law, refugee crisis, and hegemony within a liberal world order are realities of international relations that we deal with in our day to day.
INR 4075 Int Prot Hum Right
This course was instrumental in building my passion for human rights. It went over ways of studying human rights development, especifically by focusing on the human cost of human rights protection. It exposed me to terms like "civil society" and legal frameworks like the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Attached is one of my works from the class, focusing on Venezuelan civil society.
REL 3308: Studies in World Religions
I took this class with Dr. d' Elena. A brilliant professor who worked with Rohyngian muslims in Myanmar, her global perspective pushed me to look at religion in different ways. Her class not only taught us the basics of Abrahamic religion, put it pushed us to look at non-Western religions like Janism and Buddhism. In her class, we also had fascinating conversations about how colonialism, political proccesses, and development have historically blended with religion. My final paper on Religious Colonization and Syncretism in Africa is also attached.
