Melbourne High School Crew traces its roots to 1977, when teachers Pat Hernacki and Earl Wheeler introduced students to the sport of rowing—one of the oldest collegiate sports in the United States.

At the time, only a handful of high schools and youth organizations in Florida offered rowing programs. With invaluable support from alumni of Florida Tech Crew, who served as the program's primary coaching resource, Melbourne High School Crew quickly established a strong foundation.

Throughout its history, the program has experienced periods of growth and change, but its commitment to excellence, teamwork, and competitive spirit has remained constant. While team size has varied over the years, generations of student-athletes, coaches, and families have contributed to a culture that continues to inspire success. Today, Melbourne High School remains the only high school in Brevard County with a rowing team.

Melbourne High School Crew has proudly represented the school at local, state, regional, and national competitions. Alumni of the program have gone on to compete at the collegiate level, earn athletic scholarships, and serve as coaches within the rowing community.

Since 1977, Melbourne High School Crew continues to compete at the highest levels of scholastic rowing, including state championships and national regattas. As rowing in Florida has expanded to more than 40 youth and scholastic programs, the level of competition has grown significantly. Melbourne High School Crew continues to meet that challenge, regularly racing against some of the nation's top programs.

The program's longevity is a testament to the unwavering support of the local community. For more than three decades, Florida Tech provided storage facilities, practice space, and coaching support through its rowing alumni. Today, Melbourne High School Crew proudly calls Ballard Park home.

As a parent-run organization, the club remains dedicated to supporting its athletes while entrusting coaching and training to qualified rowing professionals. Through the generosity of our sponsors, donors, alumni, families, and community partners, Melbourne High School Crew continues to thrive, developing student-athletes and carrying forward a proud tradition of excellence on and off the water.
