In this workshop you will learn the basics of practical swordplay or Jiànfǎ (劍法) and discover how Chinese swordsmanship is unique in comparison to the more well known Japanese and European systems of fencing.
A first for Melbourne, this active workshop will appeal to, and bring together those with an interest in historical fencing, chinese martial arts, and competitive sport with a difference!

An active martial arts workshop that teaches practical use of Jiàn (劍), the traditional Chinese straight-sword.
Introduction to Jiàn (劍).
Empty hand defense and sword drawing technique.
The practical methodology of swordplay with Jiàn - foundations of attack, defense and footwork.
Drills and exercises for solo practice and with a partner.
Understanding the role of Chinese philosophy in swordplay.
Dispelling popular myths and misconceptions about the sword in Chinese martial arts.
This workshop is the first collaboration across Canberra and Melbourne-based Jiànfǎ schools, with a program influenced by noted swordsman, Scott M. Rodell of the Academy of Chinese Swordsmanship, USA.

Your fee helps cover venue hire, insurance and refreshments, as well as travel and accommodation costs of our guest instructor, who is travelling interstate for the event.
No prior experience in martial arts is required to participate. This workshop is open to people of all ages, genders, fitness and ability. The workshop will be presented in English, with some terminology in Chinese Mandarin relating to swordplay.
We suggest this activity is appropriate for older children and teens who are comfortable working alongside adults. Children under 16 may attend but must be accompanied by a parent. It is a long day with lots of exercise, so please take this into account. Places are limited, so we cannot offer a discount for younger participants.
You will be participating in sword practice with a variety of partners, so there is always element of risk, but that is part of the fun! As an introductory workshop, there will be no free sparring. Instead you will be engaged in set drills, with a focus on controlled play, under the supervision of experienced instructors. Fun and friendly, working with a cooperative partner to build your skills.
We will provide wooden jiàn (chinese swords) of sparring quality, light gloves and safety glasses. Steel swords and fencing gear will not be used in this beginner's workshop.
Loose clothes/active wear.
Comfortable shoes for a movement class - runners, skate shoes etc
Water bottle.
A packed lunch or lunch money (shops nearby).
