Melanie graduated from the Marine Biology Research Program (MBRP) at the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School, located on Governors Island. 

She actively participated in the Harbor SEALs citizen science program, was a scientific consultant for CIVITAS, represented the Waterfront Alliance and Billion Oyster Project, and presented her baseline study of the East River at various events including the New York City Science and Engineering Fair.
