Melaka Home Cooking Class

Hi, I'm Li Ting!

My name is Li Ting, your host for Melaka Home Cooking Class. I was born and raised in Melaka, the home for Nyonya cuisine in Malaysia.

I've been making (and eating!) Nyonya Kuih, traditional snacks essential to the Peranakan ever since I was young. Nyonya Kuih was a must during special occasions and celebrations in many Malaysian family (including mine!) as it symbolised prosperity, fortune and longevity.

Traditionally, Nyonya recipes were very closely guarded among the Peranakan. Those times had changed and I would like to share my family’s secret recipes with you.

I speak 3 languages - English, Chinese and Malay. So we can conduct classes in these 3 languages.

This was my second time taking Li Ting’s class and wow! Take it from me, you don’t want to miss this class. I took my first class in March 2019 and then came back in August 2019 with my mom, so she could learn all about kuih! As this was my second time, I want to promote this class even more! Li Ting is such a conscientious teacher and so gracious. If you make a mistake, she’ll help you figure out the solution with grace. She’s such a wealth of information and has such a warm heart. Her classes are timed very well, so you’ll never be bored waiting for things to steam or bake. Her recipes are thought out well and the portions are generous. My mom and I left class with several boxes of kuih take away. Her attention to detail and her passion for sharing about Malaysian culture will certainly amplify your Malaysian experience. To foreigners and Malaysians alike, please take this class! You won’t find a better teacher out there.

It was a great experience learning how to prepare local Nyonya delights like Kuih Lapis, pineapple tart and Onde Onde. We had the class in a bungalow with very comfortable vibe & clean setup. It's not like a formal class or observing session because you literally get to do-it-yourself and that's all the fun part. Despite not having much cooking experience, it is easy to follow the step-by-step guide to get everything done. I was having some tough time when doing the pineapple tart, but the host guided me patiently to help me finish it. Sometimes, the host mum would chip in some advice and helped us to understand alternatives to make the food taste better. Not only we got to enjoy our creations there (coupled with tea drinking & chit chatting with host/participants), they also provided a container to us so that we can bring the extras back. I brought it back to share with my family, and they loved it! If you wanna experience something truly local in Melaka, this is a must try for foreigners and non-Malaccans. Oh wait, I'm a Malaccan and I enjoy it with my friends too!

This has been the best experience my boyfriend and I have ever done and the highlight of our time travelling through Malaysia! The host, Li Ting, is extremely talented in baking and teaching others to bake, and showed us patience and care throughout the whole process. When we arrived, she had already weighted and prepared all of the ingredients, leaving us more time to learn and try traditional techniques. There was no pressure during the baking at all and instead it felt incredibly relaxing and therapeutic. We made three delicious sweet bakes, and Li Ting even provided the recipes of each of them so we could make them at home. Throughout the experience, there were unique touches that make it so special, and we felt incredibly lucky to be there. Li Ting is the kindest and warmest person we have ever met, and her love and passion for baking shines through everything she does. It truly was an honour for her to share her family’s recipes with us and something we will treasure for a very long time. I cannot recommend this enough- an extremely unique and special experience.

What a unique and wonderful experience! We celebrated my mom’s birthday with Li Ting and her mom. They really went all the way out to make us feel so welcomed, especially my mom. For my mom who’s a super chef herself, it was a wonderful learning experience for her too! This is a unique, interactive experience I would recommend to balance out the usual (boring) Jonker walk in malacca.

Our Airbnb experience with Li Ting was world class from start to finish. Li Ting’s house was immaculately clean and really made for a good setting for the cooking class. She had all ingredients laid out and prepared everything that needed special preparation beforehand. There were only 4 of us in the Airbnb experience and we all had a very good and fun time. Li Ting is super passionate about nonya pastries (and also French and other cultural pastries) and has travelled in south east Asia to explore how the same pastries are cooked differently. She was able to even share insights on how to make the best macarons lol. She was able to address all our queries very clearly and could tell us what would happen if we skipped certain steps and the outcome on our eventual dishes. This activity makes for good couple or friend-group bonding time. Feel free to bring all your baking queries to Li Ting cause she’s always ready to address them based on her rich experience! Also Li Ting is an excellent host 10/10 would recommend her genuine care and concern for the experience’s attendees.
