Astrophotography Contest 2023: The Sarawak Night Sky is organised by Planetarium Sultan Iskandar of Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak.

The Organizer reserves the right to modify the contest mechanisms, withdraw or terminate this contest at any time at its sole and absolute discretion without prior notices to any person.

By submitting an entry to the “Astrophotography Contest”, entrants certify that their participation in this Photo Contest is not illegal or in violation of any law, regulation, treaty, or administrative act, and that the laws of their governing jurisdiction of residence at the time of entry do not prohibit or restrict the receipt of any Prize under this Photo Contest.

Submission Deadline

Deadline for submissions is 31st July 2023. 

Eligibility

Open to all Sarawakian and non-Sarawakian residing in Sarawak aged 16 and above EXCEPT members of the jury and MEITD staff and their immediate relatives.

The theme is “Sarawak Night Sky”. Images must have wide-angle view and meet the criteria as per listed below:

Background of Celestial objects

1. Constellations

2. Stars

3. Milky Way

Foreground of building / Prominent nature in Sarawak:

1. Historic buildings

2. Government buildings

3. Significant buildings

4. Famous landmarks (Example: Jambatan Darul Hana, Cat Statue)

5. Iconic signage

6. Natural landmarks (Example: Gunung Serapi, Gunung Santubong and Tusan Beach)

Images that capture elements related to the above theme. Focusing on aesthetic values and unique arts depicting Sarawak’s lush nature and greenery as well as cultural and historic buildings and landmarks.

Submission Requirement

No participation fee is required to enter the contest.

Entries must be submitted in the period of 15th May 2023 until 15th July 2023. Late submissions will not be entertained.

All images that are submitted must be original and captured during the contest period. Contestants are required to submit the actual date when the photograph was taken.

Images that are submitted must be captured within Sarawak only.

Contestants may participate in all the three (3) themes.

Entries must be limited to three (3) best images for every selected theme, but only ONE (1) will be selected by the judges for evaluation.

Images must be in JPEG format with a resolution of 300 dpi or above and at least 2000 pixels along their widest dimension. The organizer may ask for the high-resolution photo if necessary.

Image may be attached with original copy (raw material) as a proof document.

Each participant is entitled to THREE (3) entries,

Contestants are required to submit new form for each new entry. Please use this format for your filename.

Each contestant is only eligible to receive one (1) prize for each theme.

Contestant may use any type of camera to capture their images.

Image processing is limited to image enhancement such as brightness/contrast.

Image manipulation such as composite images is not permitted except for star trails image.

Image submitted may include the Bortle Scale, date, time, location, equipment and editing software used, if available.

Submissions with watermarks, names, copyright lines, or any text of any kind are not allowed.

AI generated or AI image manipulation of any kind are not allowed.

All participants will retain the copyright on their entries.

Prizes

Prizes will be awarded based on the following categories: "Cityscape", "Constellations/Planets" and "Milky Way".

Prize breakdown for each category:

1st Prize : RM 2,000.00

2nd Prize : RM 1,500.00

3rd Prize : RM 1,000.00

Eligible Winners

The eligibility to win the contest is on the condition that the participants fully comply with the Terms and Conditions as stated herein.

Incomplete entries and/or the failure to fulfill all or any of the Terms and Conditions will automatically disqualify the participants from the contest without prior notice.

The final decision as determined by the judges in their sole discretion will be judged for its ranking of the prizes.

The judges’ decision on the winning entries is final.

The winners of the contest will be notified via WhatsApp and/or email.

The Ministry will not cover any transportation/lodging cost for the winners.

General Terms

The organizer will not be responsible or liable for any loss in connection with the contest.

By joining the contest, all participants hereby warrant that all statements personal details given are true, correct, and accurate and that they have read and understood all the Terms and Conditions of the contest and agree to unconditionally bind by it.

The organizer reserves the right to use the participant’s image for educational, promotional, publication or display purposes in print or social and electronic media with credit to the owner.

The organizer has the right to disqualify any participants who violate the Terms and Conditions of the contest.
