Education and Teaching Experience:
Megan Graves graduated with a B.M. in Music Education (Emphasis in String Teaching) from BYU in 2006 and has taught children, teens, and adults in orchestra, string performance, vocal performance, and general music and theater for over twenty years. She learned violin starting at the age of 4 years old with the Suzuki Method and utilizes concepts from that method as well as Kodaly in her teaching, and loves teaching students how to read music on their own and play with excellent tone, posture, and technique. She specializes in violin and viola, but can also teach beginning bass, cello, ukelele, and guitar, or music theory/reading.
Performance Background:
Megan was concertmistress of the BYU Symphony orchestra, and played with the BYU Philharmonic as well during her time as a music major there, studying violin with Donna Fairbanks, Ruth Monson, and Monte Belknap. She was principal violist with the Nebo Philharmonic and played viola with the Draper Philharmonic as well. She has produced, directed, and acted in multiple community musical theater performances with a live orchestra, organized fundraising concerts and shows, and just loves teaching and performing in the fine arts in general. She has performed playing improv fiddle in three different rock/folk bands for a few local performances, and played in a BYU Folk Music Ensemble.
Vocally she performed with the BYU Women's Chorus directed by Jean Applonie, the BYU Jazz Women's Choir, learning from Kelly Eisenhour, and has also sung background vocals for the world-renown vocalist Sissel in a local concert.
Her most recent fun musical adventures are performing fiddle for a new short film soundtrack, "Rustlers," playing violin as a “street musician” on a Hallmark Christmas movie, and entertaining guests as a traveling minstrel/fiddle player at Evermore Park.
When she’s not teaching or performing she works with her husband running a small local carpentry business “Nature Built Designs,” designing and building wooden toys & garden furniture, etc.
