by Megan Amram
My name is Megan Amram, and I was born on September 3, 1987, in Portland, Oregon. Looking back on my journey from a Jewish kid in the Pacific Northwest to an Emmy-nominated comedy writer, I sometimes can't believe how Twitter jokes led me to writing rooms with some of television's most beloved shows.
I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, in a Jewish family. My formative years were spent navigating the particular brand of Northwestern quirkiness that would later inform my comedy. I attended Catlin Gabel School, where I first started developing the voice that would eventually make me somewhat internet-famous.
I have a twin brother named Alec, and as I've mentioned before, my family's mixed: my mom's Jewish, and my dad's an asshole. The tension between highbrow and lowbrow humor has always fascinated me. As I once described it, there's this inherent tension in everything I loved growing up, switching between Alfred Lord Tennyson references and corn-in-my-shit jokes. That duality has become the backbone of my comedic sensibility.
I was educated at Harvard University where I graduated in 2010. College wasn't just about academics for me – it was where I really cut my teeth in comedy writing. While at Harvard, I wrote two of the Hasty Pudding Theatricals' comedy drag shows with my roommate and writing partner Alexandra Petri. Those experiences taught me the fundamentals of collaborative comedy writing and performing.
The transition from college to the professional world felt daunting, but I had a plan. I moved out to L.A. after college with the idea of getting involved in comedy writing. Little did I know that my biggest break would come from 280-character jokes.
What started as casual tweeting became something much bigger. I have amassed over 1.11 million Twitter followers who enjoy my hilarious brand of off-beat humor. My Twitter account @meganamram became a launching pad for my career in ways I never expected. Thanks in part to Twitter, I moved quickly from post-college newcomer to established comedy writer.
The platform allowed me to showcase my particular brand of absurdist, intellectual humor to a massive audience. It's surreal to think that jokes I wrote in my pajamas would eventually lead to writing for some of television's most successful comedies. My Twitter comedy has been described as a perfect blend of highbrow references and lowbrow humor.
My television writing career began with Parks and Recreation. I became a writer for the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation, working on one of the most beloved workplace comedies of the 2010s. The experience taught me how to write for established characters while contributing to the show's distinctive voice.
From there, my television career expanded. I've worked as a producer and writer, known for The Good Place (2016), Parks and Recreation (2009) and Silicon Valley (2014). I've also written episodes for Kroll Show, A.N.T. Farm, and material for the 83rd Academy Awards and the 2012 MTV Movie Awards.
But it's my work as co-writer and producer for the NBC series The Good Place that I'm most known for professionally. Working on a show that tackled philosophy, ethics, and the meaning of human existence while maintaining laugh-out-loud humor was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
Perhaps my most personal project has been "An Emmy for Megan." I created and starred in the comedy web series, An Emmy for Megan, which depicts my quest to win an Emmy. I can now add "director" and "lead actress" to my list of IMDb filter options thanks to my new, critically lauded web series.
On the last day of Emmy eligibility, I released a six-episode web series An Emmy for Megan. The project was equal parts satire and genuine expression of ambition – a meta-commentary on the entertainment industry's awards culture while also being a sincere creative endeavor.
Beyond television, I've ventured into publishing. My writing has appeared in McSweeney's, Vulture, and The Awl, among others. My book "Science...For Her!" represents another facet of my comedic voice – it's written in the vein of a faux expert breaking down complicated topics, combining my love of intellectual humor with pointed social commentary.
The book has been featured in The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, and Literary Hub. It's available wherever books are sold, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
Being recognized as an Emmy-nominated American comedy writer and performer feels like validation of all the weird jokes and creative risks I've taken over the years. From those early days writing comedy at Harvard to creating content that reaches millions of people, it's been an incredible journey.
I'm a comedian, writer, famous tweeter, and all-around very funny Jewish person – and I'm still hungry for that Emmy. Every project I take on, whether it's a television writing gig, a book, or a web series, is another chance to push boundaries and make people laugh while making them think.
My career has been built on the belief that comedy can be both intelligent and accessible, that you can make people laugh while challenging their assumptions. From Portland to Harvard to Hollywood, it's been one hell of a ride – and I'm just getting started.
