About Miss Pepper, by Pepper's Foster Mom

I was alerted to a stray dog living in an open field in North Charleston in April 2026. After assessing the situation, it was apparent this dog was completely on her own, scared, and in survival mode. The field she called home is located in front of a Family Dollar, and we were notified by employees that the dog previously belonged to homeless person who frequently resided in the field and was recently arrested, leaving her completely alone. I knew I had to do something to help her. 

Over the course of the next two months, I took her food and water weekly, dropping off full bowls and containers in various locations across the field, never being sure where she was taking shelter. She always kept her distance and never allowed me to get close, but that all changed on May 16, 2026.

I pulled into the field, and she was sitting under a tree next to a puddle of dirty water. Every other time, she ran, but this time, she stayed perfectly still -- almost to say, she was ready for help. It took two hours of sitting on the ground, countless treats, a chicken and cheese enchilada, and assistance from some amazing people, but she ultimately got in my car. This sweet girl was finally safe.
