The Media Psychology, Entertainment Media, and Emerging Technology (MEET) Lab is an interdisciplinary research group led by Dr. Mingxuan Liu in the Department of Communication at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Macau.
The lab investigates how emerging technologies and entertainment media are reshaping how people understand the world and themselves, interact with one another and with intelligent systems, and experience communication in increasingly mediated environments.
At the core of our work is a human-centered, more-than-human perspective. We value the trust that participants place in us when they share their experiences and behaviors, and we are committed to preserving the authenticity of their voices in how we represent and interpret their stories. We see research not only as a process of knowledge production, but also as an opportunity to better understand and, where possible, empower the communities we study.
At the same time, our approach moves beyond a purely anthropocentric view. As intelligent systems become increasingly capable and embedded in everyday life, we recognize their growing role in shaping communication, relationships, and social realities. We are particularly interested in the evolving relationships between humans and intelligent systems, and in understanding how these systems participate in, rather than simply mediate, communication processes.
Our mission is to advance interdisciplinary scholarship on the psychological, social, and global implications of emerging technologies. We examine how these transformations influence human behavior, communication processes, and health and well-being. Through this work, we aim to inform platform and video game design, contribute to evidence-based public policy, and enrich academic debates at the intersection of media, technology, and society.
Because both the technologies and the science surrounding them are still at an early stage, we see an important opportunity to help define this emerging area of research. The MEET Lab aims to bring this line of inquiry to the forefront, advancing knowledge while ensuring that its benefits are meaningful, inclusive, and socially grounded.
The MEET Lab is also committed to mentoring and empowering graduate students. We support hands-on, methodologically diverse research and foster collaboration with industry partners, including developers, to study emerging technologies in real-world contexts.
