It symbolizes North Star - a star that is always on the same place and can be used to find direction. In that reason octagon is used for avoiding getting lost and making mistakes.

A tree of life symbolises the connection in between everything: heaven and earth, good and bad. It symbolizes:
interconnectedness and carmic laws - it's not possible to harm someone without harming yourself;
staying in tune with nature and universe;
immortality of soul.
A cross has a powerful protective might against witchcraft, evil spirits, accidents and illnesses.
It was also used to heal wounds and sickness.
To enhance it's power even more it was combined with other symbols like circles or tree of life (as you can see from the picture.)
In South-Estonia there was a funeral tradition to cut a cross on to the living tree trunk on the way to the cemetery. It kept the spirits from returning to home.
A circle symbolizes perfection and unity, sun and also the earth, universe, infinity, harmony, fate circle of life and universal order.
