MARISA LEYVA
medusa mc was founded for women who wanted to ride, who wanted the freedom of the lifestyle without being someone's old lady. most clubs don't let in women, and they're steeped in tradition that won't let that change. the medusas don't care about age, race or class. while they primarily accept women, it's 2024, they'll accept those of any gender if they prove themselves same as any prospect would have to.
to join, one must have a valid motorcycle license and pass whatever tests the club members put you through. the prospecting stage is a test.
they're a relatively small club, with only two chapters out of arizona and california and none outside of the us (though expansion into mexico has been discussed). the arizona branch is the founding charter.
in ajo, they run the stone engine garage where they repair and sell bikes. they also run a small coffee shop in town called border town brew. the coffee shop wasn't originally something the club ran, but when the owner married into the club, the medusa's inherited operation of it. the clubhouse bar is open to the public unless the club has to close it to do business.
the medusas didn't start out as an outlaw club (involved in criminal activity) but times were tough. they still do plenty of legitimate business, and community work, but on the side they're involved in money laundering, weapons trafficking. they've made an active choice not to be involved in the drug trade or illegal sex work.
their founder marisa was active within the club until her death in 2011 at 70 years old. she hadn't been president for some time, but she was still involved until the time of her death. after her death, the former president left to be a part of the california chapter. there was a bit of reorganizing within the club, but eventually the former vice president was voted in as president. the members of the california chapter attended marisa's funeral. the club's founding changed the landscape of ajo forever, and whether or not the citizens of ajo always enjoyed having the medusa's based out of their town, there was no doubt the death of their founder shook up the community.
after marisa's death the trouble wouldn't stop for the medusas. within the next 5 years the president and sargent at arms were killed in a hit by another mc. they were at odds for those 5 years until the score was settled. during that time miranda sutton became president and she instated marcus howard as their new sargent at arms. this was the first time one of the few male members of the club had been in a leadership role. there was some dissent, but enough voting members of the club agreed he was right for the job.
of course, being an outlaw club has meant that the medusas have had their fair share of trouble with the law since their inception. members have gone to jail, have even died for the club. wearing the patch means you're advertizing to the world you're willing to do almost anything for the club, but it also means having a club behind you that's willing to do almost anything for you.
