MedTech Academy
Supplemental Application and Contract
MedTech Academy at SciTech is a small learning community designed around a sequence of courses that fulfill college entrance requirements while building skills that help students gain access to the most cutting-edge and in-demand careers. Students explore the biomedical sciences and find the career that is right for them.
MedTech students are eligible for exclusive internships across San Diego County, including Scripps Health Care, Salk Institute for Biological Sciences, Life Sciences Summer Institute and ScienceBridge at UCSD. These opportunities build resumes with experience that gets students hired.
SciTech is one of only two schools in San Diego Unified School district that offer Biomedical Sciences curriculum by award-winning Project Lead the Way. In these unique courses, students interact with biomedical concepts in project-based, hands-on learning.
Participation in the MedTech Academy includes:
*Though the course sequence is determined, MedTech administration and counseling reserves the right to modify the course selections to benefit the program as needed. You will be notified of any changes, should they be deemed necessary.
Upon enrollment in the MedTech Academy, your signed agreement indicates your commitment to:
Academic Performance:
It is expected that students in the MedTech Academy seek out assistance in courses in which they perceive a need for help. Teachers within the MedTech Academy have regularly scheduled office hours and are available at other times upon request. Students who receive a grade below a “C” in any class must request tutoring from the instructor and may be required to attend after-school or Saturday tutoring.
Attendance:
Attendance at school is always imperative. In the MedTech Academy it is even more important because of the commitment of our industry partners and community to educate future workers and professionals. It is expected that MedTech Academy students will have exemplary attendance. Failure to adhere to this standard will result in school and Academy consequences.
Professional Behavior and Attitude:
Since we frequently interface with the industry community, it is important that behavior and attitude reflect knowledge about our specific pathway; behavior that respect the rules and regulations of that industry; a professional demeanor and appearance; and an attitude of enthusiasm and seriousness regarding school, the MedTech Academy program, and each student’s goals.
Participation:
You MUST be enrolled in each of the cohorted classes for your grade level. Additional courses you wish to take must be scheduled around the MedTech required courses. You are also expected to attend all MedTech activities. If you feel that you are unable to miss school for a scheduled field trip, internship, mentoring appointment, etc., you must make arrangements with the sponsoring teacher to arrange an alternative assignment. During their senior year, students are expected to participate in an end of the year showcase that reflects on their high school academy achievements. All academy students are responsible for completing community service hours (with a minimum of 10 hours per year) and submitting documentation of hours to their AVID teacher.
