Dear Colleagues,
You are invited to join the newly-established “Mediterranean Bowed Instruments” discussion list. We have created this as an open discussion list for all persons having an interest in the bowed musical instruments of the Mediterranean (for instance rebab, lyra, rabel, rebec etc).
We are also concerned with instruments from further afield that may have direct or indirect relations with the Mediterranean bowed instruments – for instance the Bulgarian gadulka or the Iraqi joza). Our intention is to develop a multi-disciplinary approach, so the list is open to contributions coming from historical musicology, ethnomusicology, historically informed performance, music iconography, organology and other relevant fields.
Necessarily our discussions will also involve considerations of musical modes (maqam, makam, dromoi etc).
We welcome participants from every aspect of musical experience, including theoretical frameworks, construction technology; archival activity and performance practice (both historical and in the present day). You can join the list by sending your name and e-mail to
ed.emery@soas.ac.uk
Or you can subscribe yourselves directly by visiting this page.

In the longer term we are hoping that it may be possible to organise a conference to bring together practitioners, constructors, historians and musicologist in order to develop this field of research further.
With best regards,
