In the past, Ibiza has been claimed by Spanish, French and Greek and Roman Empires. The Norwegians also invaded the island on their Crusade to Jerusalem, as did the British as they sailed between their two British colonies, Gibraltar and Menorca.
Ibiza is perhaps the world´s meca for fun and nightlife. There are six superclubs in Ibiza that fulfil every expectation of those who love music and nightlife: Pachá, Space, Amnesia, Eden, Es Paradis and Privilege, where more than 10,000 people gather every summer night.
Ibiza and Formentera, together with more than fifty islets, the largest of which is Es Vedrá, are known as the Pitiusa islands. They form a different archipelago to the one made up of Mallorca and Menorca, although nowadays they are known as the Balearic Islands.
The real name of Ibiza is Eivissa. Ibiza was colonised by the Carthaginians from 654 BC, and they called it Ybošim ("Islands of the god Bes") and it has very important archaeological sites, including one of the largest Punic sites in the world: the necropolis of Puig des Molins.
