If there’s anyone in dire need of some laughter, it’s healthcare workers. And they’ll get a healthy dose of it from a performance of H.R. Britton’s “Medical Melodies.” Inspired by Weird Al Yankovic and Alan Sherman, Britton rewrites the lyrics of pop and rock tunes from the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s to reflect the humorous side of a career in healthcare.
With just his voice and guitar, Britton takes songs like Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” and turns them into songs like “50 Ways to Love Your Liver.” The Rolling Stones’ song “Brown Sugar” becomes a song about blood sugar. Or, John Lennon’s iconic “Imagine” becomes a silly ode to medical imaging.
For over thirty years, H.R. Britton has been an actor, musician, comedic storyteller, host of variety shows, and lover of community. He has acted on film and onstage in Minneapolis, New York City, and Boston, and has toured his comedic one man shows internationally. It is his career switch to healthcare reception that provided the impetus for this new venture.
“I’ve got a surreal sense of humor, and I find it very gratifying to get nurses, doctors, receptionists and lab techs laughing. Working in healthcare’s not a walk in the park," says Britton. "Every laugh helps.”
