The world is gradually realizing that the medical use of Cannabis is a serious matter and that, who defends it, care about the right to health and quality of life of millions of patients who suffer from chronic diseases such as Epilepsy, Alzheimer's, depression, among others.
The agenda has gained space, and we are very grateful, but with this visibility, there is also a lot of misinformation. This post is our collaboration in the fight against medical Cannabis fake news.
We bring truths about nine great myths:
1. Insufficient Study On Medical Use Of Cannabis
This is a MYTH - with a capital letter - very widespread.
One Google search is enough to make it fall apart. There are thousands of studies already carried out around the world on the medicinal properties of Cannabis. The physician Elisaldo Carlini, who died in 2020, is a reference. His research that began in the 1970s was published in renowned scientific journals here and abroad.
2. Medical Cannabis Can Stimulate The Use Of Other Drugs
The truth is:
Cannabidiol (or CBD ), the most commonly used drug, has in its composition, psychoactive substances present in Cannabis. And in relation to THC ( tetrahydrocannabinol ), also essential for the treatment of various diseases, there are no studies that prove the correlation between the adoption of the drug and the use of other drugs, such as opioids.
In fact, there are researches that indicate cannabidiol as an ally in combating drug abuse, like the one from the University of Mississippi.
Many doctors defend its use in the treatment of drug addicts, such as the neurosurgeon and technical director of the Cannabinoid Center of Excellence, Dr Pedro Pierro. He points out that "it is necessary to get rid of prejudices. Still, in the last century, one of the most relevant journals in the world, The Lancet, published a study on the use of Cannabis for people with opium dependence. We have several working groups that use Cannabis for patients with crack addiction and who are managing to get these people out of addiction".
3. Legalizing The Medical Use Of Cannabis Can Increase Crime
Quite the opposite!
In the United States, where medical use is more widespread, it has even been possible to assess that the increase in crime occurs, in fact, where legalized distribution is prohibited.
4. Medical Use Of Cannabis Increases Recreational Use Among Adolescents
Again: MYTH - and there is evidence!
There are already several studies that show that this does not happen. Legalizing medical marijuana doesn't mean that every adolescent will start smoking marijuana from the next day. If laws and regulations are followed accordingly, this won't happen anytime soon.
5. Medical Cannabis Is Just An Excuse For Those Who Want To "Get High"
It's not it.
First, because cannabis-based drugs do not contain the plant's psychoactive substances and they do not "come cheap". For example, cannabidiol acid (CBDA) and tetrahydrocannabinol acid (THCA - not to be confused with THC) are psychoactive.
Other cannabinoids, such as THC & CBD, which doesn't contain psychoactive substances, are also essential for the treatment of some diseases.
And like any medication, these substances are prescribed by health professionals, and patients are closely monitored during treatment.
6. Medicinal Use Of Cannabis Can Cause An Overdose
A total of ZERO people have already overdosed due to medical Cannabis, which is easy to explain.
Unlike opioids and benzodiazepines, Cannabis does not interfere with the functioning of the respiratory system, so it does not cause an overdose.
7. United Nations (UN) Has Banned The Medical Use Of Cannabis
This one is also false. Because of the stigma that this plant suffers, some mistakenly believe that the 1961 United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs prohibits medical Cannabis.
However, the text the document uses is: "The use of cannabis for purposes other than medical and scientific must be stopped."
8. Patients Who Use Medical Cannabis May Pose Risks To Safety At Work
As we have already explained in this exact text, many drugs are made with CBD. They do not contain psychoactive substances, so they do not affect the patient's motor capacity, nor are they able to decrease concentration or cause problems in the work environment.
In the case of drugs that contain THC in their formulas, it will be up to the doctor to give guidance in relation to the dosage and maintenance of the patient's work activities, just as it happens in treatments with other medications.
9. Medical Cannabis Can Cure Almost Anything
Calm down!
The medical use of Cannabis really has a lot of potentials. It can help in the treatment and alleviate symptoms of several diseases, such as:
· Anxiety
· Cancer
· Refractory Epilepsy
· Autism
· Alzheimer's
· Multiple Sclerosis
· Sleep Disorders
· Chronic Pain
But it is far from a miracle formula, and it will not work the same for everyone.
The decision to use cannabis-based drugs should be based on science and personalized to each case, always with the guidance of a qualified health professional to prescribe this type of medication.
Now that you know some of the myths that revolve around medical Cannabis, you can do your part in raising awareness in society and spread this information around.
