Why should I care about the way I use media? How can I become a more deliberate consumer of information?
During this class, you will learn new tools to evaluate the information that you encounter online on a daily basis, and become more mindful of how media shapes your beliefs, your emotions and your decisions.
As a class, we will explore media and context through the eyes of one another. Together, we will curate credible and reliable sources of news and information from a variety of perspectives.
You will also learn mindfulness exercises you can use to help manage how you interact with media and create your own Google site exhibit that expresses a personal reflection of your relationship with media.
After this course, you will be able to strike a better balance between information overload and mindful consumption, elevate the power of share, and improve the quality of information others will come in contact with.
Each week you will select media that you have encountered to curate an exhibit that reflects how this class has impacted the way you think about media. This is shared publicly with your class mates.
At the end of the course, we will tour the exhibits and have a discussion. Navigate to your page using the drop down menu.
You’ll be sharing and discussing sources of news and information with each other: examining credibility and reliability, bias and perspective.
Together as a class, you’ll create a curated list of news and information sources that you can take away to broaden your media feed.
On top of that, you’ll recognize the influence you have to improve the quality of information for your friends, family and community.
Using Google slides, you will create one slide per week with a visual and share your personal thoughts and reflections. This will be private and only viewed by the instructor.
At the end of the course, you will send your completed journal to the instructor. This can be as creative as you want it to be!
Use the anytime learning modules below to access the lesson and the homework for each week. We will meet as a class every Monday from 6:00-8:00 pm to share, discuss and collaborate as a class in real time. The homework assignments must be complete by noon on Monday so instructors can prepare for our weekly Zoom meeting.

Now that we have learned some mindfulness techniques and we understand how media, context and consumption are influencing us, Let's shift our perspective to see how media is personalized and targeted to individuals. This week you will think critically about how content makes its way into your media feeds. Does your social media experience look like that of your class mates? Is content presented to you in a different way based on your likes, dislikes and activity online?
Complete the Nearpod lesson for the week. Write at least two paragraphs in response to the open-ended questions. Click here to launch Nearpod WEEK 4! (Join on Nearpod using code GFCME ).
Watch this screencast (hyperlink would be there to take students to a video), which will show you how to use Facebook Ad Library, how to use ImgFlip to make your own memes, and how to post your meme to the collaborate bulletin board on Nearpod.
Complete the assignment, and tune in to the class discussion Monday at 6pm to see what your classmates have discovered, and share your thoughts.
Select some of the memes that resonated with you (your own, a classmate's, or one you found) and add them to your personal Google site exhibit. Choose one meme that you created and add it to your slideshow journal with your personal reflection for the week.
