Benedict Arnold was an American General who, in exchange for monetary rewards and titles, betrayed the United States and went over to the British side.
General Arnold was not caught. He lived out his life in England.
The young British soldier who orchestrated the deal with Arnold was Major John Andre.
Andre was caught. Three American patrols caught him with the incriminating plans in his boots.
Andre was taken to George Washington. He was put on trial.
Many American officers became sympathetic to Andre.
Alexander Hamilton
"Everything that is amiable in virtue, in fortitude, in delicate sentiment, and accomplished manners, pleads for him: but hard-hearted policy calls for a sacrifice."
Colonel Stephen Moylan
"His conduct through the examination has been open, candid, manly, and has gained him the esteem of every one."
Joel Barlow
"A politer gentleman, or a greater character of his age, perhaps is not alive. He was twenty-eight years old. He was dressed completely and suffered with calmness and cheerfulness."
Richard Kidder Meade
"You may think this declaration strange, as he was an enemy, until I tell you that he was a rare character. From the time of his capture to his last moment, his conduct was such as did honor to the human race."
Marquis Lafayette
"I could not help regret what happened to him.”
Benjamin Tallmadge
"I cannot say enough of his fortitude—unfortunate youth."
