Benjamin Tallmadge attempted to intervene with Washington on behalf of Andre, whom Tallmadge considered to be an honorable officer simply carrying out the wishes of his superiors.
Washington responded by reminding Tallmadge that Capt. Nathan Hale, who was a close friend and classmate of Tallmadge, was hanged by the British for spying back in New York even after he, too, had exhibited great honor and courage.
