Upon taking control of the Continental Army in the outskirts of Boston, Washington's task was to expel the British army from the city of Boston.
Washington lacked cannon and gunpowder for the task. The Americans had access to cannon from a British Fort they recently confiscated, Ticonderoga, in New York. But Ticonderoga was hundreds of miles distant, and across the Appalachian mountains covered with snow.
