Who We Are
American Legion District 20 is the Mecklenburg County district of the Department of North Carolina, representing twelve posts spanning Charlotte, Cornelius, Huntersville, Matthews, Mint Hill, Newell, Paw Creek, Pineville, and surrounding communities. We are part of Division 4, the largest veterans district in one of North Carolina's fastest-growing counties — home to more than 1.2 million residents.
Our Posts
District 20 brings together Posts 9, 221, 262, 345, and 380 in Charlotte, Post 86 in Cornelius, Post 321 in Huntersville, Post 235 in Matthews, Post 555 in Mint Hill, Post 287 in Newell, Post 353 in Paw Creek, and Post 337 in Pineville. Each post serves its local community through veteran services, family programs, youth initiatives, and civic engagement.
Our Heritage
Members of the American Legion Hornets Nest Post No. 9 were among the driving forces behind what would become American Legion Memorial Stadium — envisioning it as a memorial to Mecklenburg County residents who served the United States during World War I. That patriotic proposal turned the tide of public opinion, and in June 1934, Charlotte City Council voted to name the facility American Legion Memorial Stadium. That building still stands today, renovated and serving the Queen City — a permanent reminder of what Legionnaires built in this community.
Mecklenburg County itself earned the name "The Hornet's Nest" during the American Revolution, when General Cornwallis encountered such fierce resistance from Charlotte's patriots during his 1780 southern campaign that he reportedly called the city a veritable hornet's nest of rebellion. That same fighting spirit lives in this district today.
Our Mission
We serve veterans, military families, and our communities across Mecklenburg County through advocacy, benefits navigation, youth programs, and mutual support. The American Legion Department of North Carolina welcomes all veterans who have served honorably. District 20 is where that service continues — post by post, neighbor by neighbor.
