Nick Kleinschmit and Aaron Holmberg developed 3 different laboratory sized shock tubes at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for simulating shock waves generated by explosives. They were given a work space, a time line, and a budget to start. This equipment was used to study the correlation between shockwaves and traumatic brain injury in biological samples in pursuit of of better helmets and TBI treatments for the US military.

We designed the facility, shock tubes, remote data acquisition systems, remote gas control systems, and procedures all from scratch. This facility became the crowning achievement of a $3 million arm grant to UNL and was was built with less than 10% of the budget.
