What is the Triple Gunas in Hinduism?

Triguna comes under ancient psychological concepts of Hindu scripture which means “three qualities”. According to this, the human mind is made of Sattwa, Rajas, and Tamas. Sattwa means “purity” and “holiness”; Rajas is activeness and Tamas defines “laziness” and “inertia”. The combined effects of these three attributes make one’s personality.

All three gunas are present in different degrees of predominance according to spiritual purity. The gunas are born from prakriti. Being in higher world means the predominance of Sattwa guna; in lower world, the predominance of Tamas exists and the middle world contains a predominance of Rajas. All these gunas decide the karma of an individual.
