BLACK HISTORY MONTH FUNDRAISER

MAKE SURE TO READ THIS ENTIRE PAGE.

History.com

This month is Black History Month, and to spread awareness of the people and important movements in Black History, we will be doing a project.

We will each create an art piece centered around BHM, and we will sell them to MEA families. We will donate all the money we receive to a black-led organization- Detour Empowers, which is a mentoring program for women of color to help promote equity and inclusion for them in higher education and employment. You can create as many pieces as you want, but I suggest spending time on one, because the whole point of this is to create something people will want to buy. You are all very talented, and I have no doubt people will like your work.

It can be hard deciding on a subject matter, so here is the list of prompts:

  1. Black Artists (can be any type of art- painters, dancers, musicians)

  2. Important Movements in Black History

  3. Important figures in Black History/BLM/Civil Rights Movements

  4. Celebrating an aspect of Black Culture

  5. Black Activists Today

  6. Any other creative piece centered around Black History

Your art piece can be created with any medium you want, and whatever size you want (as long as it isn't too small). For example, you can do a watercolor painting on paper or an acrylic painting on canvas. Since we are going to sell these, please make sure your piece is a finished piece, not just a sketch.

Make sure to prepare a 3-4 sentence summary of the person/movement/topic your art piece is based on.

-Add the dimensions of the piece as well as the mediums you used AND a price- starting with $30

IMPORTANT: Please make sure to do research about your subject matter beforehand for this project. It is extremely important to be respectful to Black culture and Black History. For example, if you are going to do an art piece based on Martin Luther King Jr., make sure you have at least a basic idea of his importance in Black History, and do a piece that respectfully represents his contributions to civil rights.
