The Baltimore Checkerspot, Euphydryas phaeton, was named Maryland's official state insect in 1973, after George Calvert, our first lord Baltimore. The orange and black colors match the families crest.

The Baltimore Checkerspot is distributed from Canada, southward to the Virginia and North Carolina, and westward to the Great Lakes region. Historically, this species was commonly found in 15 counties of Maryland, yet today colonies are only known from 11 sites in 7 counties.
