An MD/PhD is a type of combined degree that is offered by many research-focused medical schools. Students who participate in these programs get both medical and research trainings and a majority of them pursue careers as physician-scientists, who are at the forefront of medical research and innovation.
The typical length is 8 years, where 4 years are spent pursing the MD, and an additional 4 years are spent getting the PhD. However, this can differ from program to program, and can range from 7-10 years, depending on how quickly you are able to complete your PhD.
Our main goal in writing this book was to provide our perspectives from having recently gone through the application process. This process is very stressful, and can at times seem overwhelming, so we wanted to use the knowledge that we gained during our application cycles to help future applicants navigate this process. We hope that this will demystify many aspects of this application process and will encourage more people to apply for MD/PhD programs.
