Material Design by Nanomechanics Group

We design stronger materials through better understanding of the nanoscale deformation mechanics

We are a young and vibrant group based at the Department of Mechanical & Electro-Mechanical Engineering, National Sun-Yat Sen University in Southern Taiwan. We use experimental techniques to better understand deformation mechanics at the nanoscale, and apply this knowledge to design stronger materials. Have a look around and let us know if you any questions!

081723 Installation of AVISO Software

We recently installed the AVIZO Software by Thermo Fisher Scientific. This is a powerful software for 3D reconstruction of microscopic images, taken from SEM or TEM. This allows for tomographic images to be constructed and provides a much better spatial realization of the microstructural features. We thank Prof. 張六文 from NSYSU MOES for the kind support!

081723 Newcomers dinner

We have three new students 淯詮、煒昇、政隆 joining us this year (112學年度). Welcome to the exciting world of small-scale mechanics and materials design!

071423 Lab training week

Finished one week of intense lab training (sample prep, microscopes, crystal growth, mech testing, nanoindentation) with Prof Jacob Huang’s group

Prof. Huang carefully explained EBSD (installed on Zeiss Supra) to the students

061623 End-of-term lunch

We end this busy term with an excellent buffet lunch at 帕里巴黎。Thanks everyone for the hard work, we look forward to another fruitful term ahead!

032323 Lab cleaning competition

We have won the 3rd place in the annual lab cleaning contest. Thanks everyone for not making a mess and we are aiming for 1st place next year!

021623 New term, new start!

With great pleasure we kick-off our term with the DiagTech Lab (https://lingshanyu.squarespace.com/). Thanks for joining and we expect more interactions between the two labs!

020923 Visit to China Steel Corp

Great bringing the group to visit China Steel Corporation (biggest steel company in Taiwan!) and see how they properly treat steel. Many thanks for the host and looking forward to see more collaboration with NSYSU MEME in the future

110222 First successful 3D-printing attemp

We have successfully commissioned our SolidMen300 SLM metal printer. This is a badge for the department to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Many thanks to 本為 to take the lead on this and the team for helping! This is a great milestone for the group to be able to print self-designed objects out without cracking!

081222 First group meeting

MDNG gathered for the first time after the long summer holiday. We spend some time talking about future research direction and get to know each other. Thanks for coming and looking forward to do exciting work together

061222 Launch of our group website

Materials Design by Nanomechanics group website is finally online. Keep an eye on it as we will be constantly updating

053022~060222 Bo visits University of South Carolina

Bo visited his alma mater and gave a seminar on extreme nanomechanical tests for nuclear applications. He was amazed to see how much the Mechanical Engineering Department (also Aero/Nuclear) has grown over the years. He also discussed collaborations with his MS supervisor, Dr. Travis Knight, and other faculty members on several nuclear & additive manufacturing projects. The Southern Hospitality (not to mention sweet tea and BBQ) was greatly appreciated

052322~052722 ICMCTF 2022

Bo attended ICMCTF 2022 this May in San Diego, where he also co-chaired Symposium E2 on mechanical behaviour & adhesion. It was an excellent meeting to get updated on the new topics in structural/functional coatings & nanomechanics. Although attendance from Asia were low this year due to COVID restrictions, but Bo will try to bring more people back next year
