Welcome to Patapsco State Park — all trail, no pavement.
Expect a fun, technical course with plenty of rocks, roots, and rolling terrain to keep things interesting. Whether you’re racing hard, settling into a steady effort, or embracing the hike breaks, this event is built for all kinds of trail runners.
The 50K is no joke — a true test of grit, endurance, and trail legs. Cross that finish line, and you’ll have absolutely earned the bragging rights. If race day has other plans, no worries — you’ll have the option to downgrade to the 25K.
And when the miles are done, the good part keeps going. Stick around for craft beer, great food, and a post-race hangout worth staying for.

The Course - Pickall area, Patapsco State Park
The MD HEAT 25k sends runners on a well-marked 16-mile point-to-point journey through the forested heart of Patapsco Valley State Park. The course rolls through mostly shaded singletrack with two river crossings and just a brief paved stretch through a parking area — otherwise, you're on dirt the whole way. Expect over 2,000 feet of total climbing, with a mix of technical, rocky segments and smoother, more runnable stretches. You'll climb through rock scrambles, drop into fast singletrack descents, and pass through mountain bike havens and numerous stream crossings. The MD HEAT 50k participates complete the loop twice. One more reason to feel good about your miles: a portion of race proceeds goes right back to the trails through the Friends of Patapsco Valley State Park, who help care for and maintain over 200 miles of trail in the park!
