Type of rock
Quartzite is a hard, metamorphic rock that is primarily made of quartz and is often used in construction.
What does it look like?
Quartzite is usually white, gray, or tan, but can also be red, orange, pink, green, blue, or purple. The color is due to impurities that are incorporated with the quartz during metamorphism.
How/Where is it created?
Quartzite is made up of over 90% quartz, and can sometimes contain up to 99%. Quartzite is formed when sandstone or chert is subjected to high temperatures and pressures, which fuse the quartz grains together.
Does it belong?
Quartzite in this amount would normally be found on an Island like Santorini (Thera).
