The Department of Sociology, Malda College started its journey in the year of 2013 with the initiation of sociology as a pass subject in B.A. stream with four faculty members and near about 1100 students. In the year of 2015 Department of Sociology started it's Honours course with intake capacity of 30 seats. This Department achieved First Position award in University of Gour Banga undergraduate exam in the year 2018 and 2019 . The students pursuing their undergraduate in the department not only have to learn critical approaches and perspectives in the classroom but are also encouraged to participate in short field visits during vacations as part of their mandatory research projects. Departmental field work is an applied part of social research methods. This field aims to aquatint students with empirical field data collection, analysis and writing analytical and standard dissertation or research report in sociology.

The department of sociology also takes care to expose the students to the prevailing social realities through activities such as outreach programmes, regular film screening and other programmes .
