WW1 Munitions Production in Hawkshead Mills, Old Glossop
Paul Beckmann will discuss:
Isaac and Harriet Jackson’s WW1 Munitions Production in Hawkshead Mills, Old Glossop and his family's involvement (Isaac was his great-grandfather).
It will feature their setting up of a saddlery business, having moved to Glossop from Hyde. Isaac was an inventor of some genius and invented a form of belt-fastener. His wife, Harriet was an accomplished accountant and together they set up and ran Isaac Jackson Ltd, which was based at Hawkshead Mills, Old Glossop from 1905.
The firm prospered, but in WW1, like many other small engineering firms, they turned to armament production; Isaac died after the war, probably as a result of his efforts to improve production. These events involved the family in many different ways and there were several interesting stories involving local buildings and war memorials.
