The orthodox view holds that 17th-century armies relied heavily on plunder and free quarter, but recent research suggests this changed during the British Civil Wars. Although historians have studied the New Model Army’s politics, religion, officers and campaigns under Sir Thomas Fairfax, its supply and logistics remain neglected.
This has left gaps in understanding recruitment, victualling, ordnance, ammunition, clothing and arming. Sustaining up to 17,000 men required an increasingly centralised system operating beyond London and Reading.
Andrew Abrams challenges the view that Fairfax’s troops relied mainly on local resources in 1645–46, instead emphasising organised supply from London manufacturers and commercial sources.
