“Re-examining the Causes of WWI & WWII”
Tuesday 10th Mar 2026 at 7.30pm
David Morris will challenge some of the received wisdom that is currently provided to us about the Causes of the two World Wars.
The Alliances, the Armaments build up, and the mobilisation timetables were factors that made a war much more likely, and we are now told that all the combatants share the blame for the conflict. The first part of the presentation will show that ultimately it was a few callous leaders who were responsible for the deaths of millions.
Many historians and observers of the inter-war period now simplistically connect the consequences of the Versailles Treaty with Hitler’s inevitable rise to power, but this part will present an argument that it was the impacts of the Great Depression, and the ineffective responses of the fledgling Weimar Democracy, that set him on the path to highjacking the fortunes of the German nation that had ignored him for years, and bringing so much suffering to the people of Europe.
We are told that Chamberlain’s Appeasement was ill-considered, but he is now often represented as a sincere person who was just doing whatever he could to preserve the peace. We will be able to see that it was the depths of Chamberlain’s hubris and self delusion that brought not only this country to the brink of the abyss, but also almost presided over the eclipsing of democracy in Europe, and that a shorter less costly war was only narrowly prevented.
