MCode

What is MCode?

We are a club with branches at different middle schools in Montgomery County. We aim to teach students the basics of computer science and coding languages like Python and Java. Our meetings are after school and last for an hour, and all materials are accessible at home.

How do classes work?

Each week, a new concept or series of concepts will be introduced, explained, and practiced. Each student will be encouraged and given time to experiment on their own, with help always being available. Over the week, students will be given problems or exercises to help them practice. Each skill will build on the last, with frequent projects to help students practice and exercise their creativity.

What is needed?

For most classes, students will need access to a computer with an online code interpreter. One sufficient interpreter is the browser-based Codecademy. Students will be walked through what to use and how to use it in their respective classes. For our classes, the school-provided chromebook can be used.

What type of experience is required?

We offer different classes that cater to different skill levels. A beginner class will be offered for those with little to no experience and those who would like to see coding from a new perspective. An intermediate class may also be available for those with some experience in the fundamentals of computer science. The classes can adapt to each student's skillset and provide practice for a range of levels.

Winston Churchill High School

MCode has classes at Winston Churchill High School in partnership with the Competitive Coding Club. These classes teach the basics of Python and go in-depth to it's uses in the competitive coding environment and solving problems in competitions such as USACO (USA Coding Olympiad) and CodeForces.
