The Marine Corps League was founded in 1923 by Major John A. Lejeune. The league takes pride in federal charter, approved by the Seventy-Fifth Congress of the United States of America and signed and approved by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 4th 1937. The League is the only federal chartered Marine Corps related veterans organization in the country. Today the League boasts a membership of more than 76,000 men and women, officer and enlisted, active duty, reserves, and HONORABLY discharged Marine Veterans and qualified NAVY FMF Corpsmen.
The Sgt. W. E. Plueddemann Detachment 1186 was first chartered in Dec 2004 and was called the Down East 1186 Detachment until Oct 2017 when the detachment changed the name in honor of Sgt W.E. Plueddemann.
Our primary interest is assisting fellow Marines and FMF Corpsmen be they on active duty or have retired or have been honorably discharged from active duty. To this end there is Service Officer on the staff that lends information or guidance to Marines, dependents and parents.
