08/2025: Dr. Hayley McLoughlin, PhD, has been officially promoted to Associate Professor of Neurology (with tenure) and Associate Professor of Human Genetics (without tenure)!
08/2025: We’re thrilled to share that Jacen Emerson has officially received his Notice of Award (NoA) for his F31-NRSA Fellowship application through the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), where he earned an exceptional 4th percentile ranking on his first submission. This prestigious NIH fellowship will support Jacen’s thesis research on SCA3 for the next three years. The award is a testament to Jacen’s creativity, determination, and promise as a scientist, and we look forward to seeing the impact of his work in the lab and the field of neuroscience. Congratulations, Jacen!
07/2025: We officially received a Notice of Award (NoA) for a five-year NINDS-R01 grant to support our research on Peripheral Neuropathy in Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3. Remarkably, our application received a 1st percentile score at study section, reflecting the strength and innovation of the proposal! This significant NIH funding will enable us to advance our understanding of SCA3 and its impact on the peripheral nervous system. Congratulations to the entire team on this outstanding achievement!
07/2025: Maeha Sridharan rounded out the summer by presenting her research at the MNI Magnificent Michigan Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Symposium. We are excited that Maeha will be continuing her work in the lab throughout the upcoming academic year—looking forward to more great achievements ahead!
07/2025: Emma Walker concluded a productive SIREN program summer in the lab, impressing everyone with both a phenomenal poster and an outstanding oral presentation! Congratulations, Emma, on a fantastic summer of research and accomplishments!
06/2025: Addison Kim joins the lab for Summer 2025, with funding support from Northwestern's SURG program. She will assist Alexa Pukta with her SCA3 studies.
06/2025: Jacen Emerson made his McLoughlin Lab oral presentation debut at the CAG Triplet Repeat Gordon Research Conference in Tuscany, Italy, showcasing his abstract-selected work, "Cerebellar Degeneration in SCA3: Transcriptomic Insights from the Spinal Cord."
05/2025: Emma Walker has joined the lab for the summer as part of the NSF-funded Summer Intensive Research Experience in Neuroscience (SIREN) program. She will assist Jacen with his SCA3 studies.
05/2025: Hayley McLoughlin received official word that her promotion as Associate Professor of Neurology, with tenure, and Associate Professor of Human Genetics, without tenure, was approved (effective August 25th, 2025)!!!
05/2025: Maeha Sridharan will continue to work in our lab this summer, supported by an MNI Magnificent Michigan Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship!
04/2025: Over 160 5th- and 6th-grade students from Ypsilanti and Detroit public schools gathered at the Michigan League for a day of hands-on neuroscience education organized by BrainsRule!, a K-12 outreach program led by Neuroscience PhD students, including the McLoughlin Lab's Alexa Putka and Jacen Emerson. Alexa oversaw the event, and Jacen helped recruit and organize the 80+ volunteers who helped run the activities with the kids.
04/2025: Bailey Masser and Juan Mato were accepted into the 2025 Biotech Career Development Program offered through the UM Fast Forward Medical Innovation.
04/2025: At the National Ataxia Foundation (NAF) Annual Ataxia Conference, the Chief Scientific Officer presented research updates, emphasizing the foundation's philanthropic contributions. Among the spotlighted scientists, Alexa Putka from the McLoughlin Lab was recognized as an accomplished graduate student whose work is supported by NAF, fostering the next generation of ataxia researchers. She shared a quote from Alexa, "NAF’s investment in my research through the 2024 Graduate Research Fellowship has paved the way for fivefold support from NIH through a F31 training grant for predoctoral researchers from 2025 to 2027."
03/2025: Juan Mato gave an outstanding talk at the recent Glial Biology: Functional Interactions Among Glia and Neurons Gordon Research Seminar held in Ventura, CA! Hayley and Juan also attended the GRC, presenting poster updates on our lab glial-focused studies.
02/2025: Alexa Putka's first-authored paper, Cerebellar Lipid Dysregulation in SCA3: A Comparative Study in Patients and Mice, was accepted for publication in Neurobiology of Disease! We are especially grateful to our amazing collaborators, Drs. Stephanie Cologna and Varsha Mohanty for assisting with the lipidomics studies in this foundational paper.
01/2025: Alexa Putka is awarded the distinguished F31-NRSA Fellowship through the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)! The F31-NRSA fellowship is designed to support predoctoral students with the potential to become productive, independent investigators in scientific health-related research fields. Alexa’s innovative approach and dedication to ataxia research studies have earned her this highly competitive fellowship, recognizing her as a future leader in neuroscience research.
01/2025: Hayley McLoughlin accepted a new role as Associate Director of the Program in Biomedical Sciences (PIBS). She will provide strategic leadership and support in advising, teaching, and recruitment. This appointment reflects her outstanding contributions to the field and her commitment to fostering an inclusive and dynamic academic environment.
01/2025: Juan Mato's abstract for the 2025 Glial Biology: Functional Interactions Among Glia and Neurons Gordon Research Seminar was selected for a talk at the upcoming March Conference.
01/2025: Hayley McLoughlin attended the 10th International Conference on Unstable Microsatellites in Human Disease (UMHD10) held in the Guanacaste Province of Costa Rica. Her abstract was selected for a short talk and she also served as a Session Chair. "The science was exciting, but the scenery/adventure/networking with colleagues will serve as core memories for years to come!"-Hayley

11/2024: Hayley McLoughlin and Alexa Putka presented Flash talks at the International Congress for Ataxia Research (ICAR) 2024 in London. Both were selected abstracts for oral presentations. This was a record-setting event for the ataxia research field with over 600 attendees, 32 countries, 470 submitted abstracts, 12 sessions, and 8 workshops!
11/2024: Check out the latest ataxia collaborative effort led by the La Spada lab, Dysregulation of zebrin-II cell subtypes in the cerebellum is a shared feature across polyglutamine ataxia mouse models and patients recently published in Science Translational Medicine.
11/2024: Bailey Masser presented her ongoing thesis work at the American Society of Human Genetics Annual meeting in Denver, CO.

9/2024: Hayley McLoughlin participated in United Against Ataxia Hill Day with ~115 other Ataxia Advocates from 32 states!!
9/2024: We welcomed two new undergraduate research assistants, Armaan Merchant and Tolu Adelaja, into the lab!
8/2024: Bailey Masser's first first-author paper was published from her Master's Thesis work.
6/2024: Jacen Emerson passed his prelims and officially became a Ph.D. Candidate in the Neuroscience Graduate Program!!
6/2024: Omar Halim joined the lab for a summer research experience through the R25 NIH-funded Neuroscience Undergraduate Research Opportunity (NURO) program.
6/2024: Alexa Putka was awarded a Rackham Candidate Research Grant and Jacen Emerson was awarded a Rackham Pre-Candidate Research grant to support their thesis studies.
6/2024: Students come and go but will always be considered McLoughlin lab members! Jacob Stein, an undergraduate research assistant in the lab, graduated and took a research position at Columbia University. Ping-Jung Lin completed his Genetics Master's degree and is off to an industry position on the West Coast. Congratulations on these major training milestones Jacob and Ping-Jung! Vikram Sundararajan is off to medical school at NEOMED after working for two years in the lab as an undergraduate research assistant, culminating his time in the lab by completing an honors thesis under the mentorship of Alexa Putka.
5/2024: Alexa Putka received the NGP Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force Champion. A recognition award for going above and beyond the call to service in NGP and tireless efforts to extend greater equity and inclusivity within and beyond the graduate program. Way to go Alexa!
5/2024: The McLoughlin lab attended the Annual University of Michigan Neuroscience Conference. Hayley gave a talk entitled "Unraveling SCA3 Pathogenesis and Paving the Way for Therapeutics" and Alexa, Juan, Bailey, and Vikram all presented posters on their work!!

3/2024: Jacen Emerson, a neuroscience graduate student, officially joined the McLoughlin lab to complete his dissertation studies.

2/2024: Exciting news! Two neuroscience graduate students in McLoughlin lab were awarded their first external funding support! 11/2023: The Srinivasan and McLoughlin labs were awarded the $200K Multidisciplinary Pilot Award from the Michigan Institute for Cardiovascular and Neurological Health!

9/2023: Dr. McLoughlin joined the External Oversight Committee (EOC) of the Blueprint Neurotherapeutics Network for Biologics (BPN-Biologics), as an external advisory expert directed to provide independent advice to the NIH program staff and its current projects.
9/2023: Our collaborative study with the Synofzik and Costa Labs assessing the abundance of neuronal-specific NfL protein in the peripheral blood of SCA3 YACQ84 mice is published in Disease Models and Mechanisms.
8/2023: Juan is awarded a Rackham Precandidate Graduate Student Research Grant to kick off funding for his thesis studies! Congrats!

9/2020: Congratulations to Dr. Peter Todd and colleagues on funding support for a collaborative NICHD/NINDS NIH P50 Fragile X Center grant. We are excited to assist with your lab's exploration of pathogenic mechanisms across Fragile X-associated disorders.
7/2020: Excited to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Dr. Gülin Öz (University of Minnesota) and Dr. Carmo Costa (University of Michigan) to assess cross-sectional metabolic biomarkers in SCA3 mouse models using noninvasive, quantifiable magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). See our published work titled "In vivo molecular signatures of cerebellar pathology in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 in Movement Disorders."
5/2020: University of Michigan begins phased lab re-activation. BSRB is among the first buildings to allow 30% of research capacity to return.
3/2020: The Lab shut down to critical staff only due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
3/2020: Dr. McLoughlin presents at the University of Michigan Pathology T32 Translational Workshop Development- Talk titled: Antisense Oligonucleotide Therapy for Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3.
3/2020: The McLoughlin lab received the MICHR Pathways to Independence award for a study profiling human biofluids for Spinocerebellar Ataxia type 3 biomarker discovery.

10/2019: Annie Zalon presented her first national conference poster at the annual Society for Neuroscience (SfN) meeting in Chicago. Dr. Hayley McLoughlin chaired the "Animal Models of Neurodegeneration" nanosymposium and gave a talk on the glial contributions to SCA3 mouse model pathogenesis.
10/2019: Kristen Schuster, MS joined the lab as a Senior Research Technician.
9/2019: Dr. Hayley McLoughlin is promoted to Research Assistant Professor in the University of Michigan Department of Neurology
8/2019: Dr. Hayley McLoughlin received word her MICHR Pathways to Independence award titled, “Profiling Human Biofluids for Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3 Biomarker Discovery”, has received a fundable score from the University of Michigan Scientific Review Committee.
7/2019: Congratulations to the Scaglione Lab at Duke on their recently funded R01. Through this grant, the McLoughlin lab will collaborate to assess the therapeutic effects of a novel chaperone protein expressed in the SCA3 mouse brain.

5/2018: Dr. Hayley McLoughlin and Dr. Hank Paulson are awarded U01 CREATE Bio NINDS funding to test the efficacy of lead antisense oligonucleotides in a SCA3 mouse model expressing the full-length human disease gene, complete tolerability studies in rodent and non-human primates to support IND-enabling studies, and optimize a CSF biomarker assay to assess ATXN3 target engagement and treatment efficacy.
