The McKindles lab goes out for some field work
The McKindles lab was featured on their work on Harmful algal blooms and Water Quality. Read more here!
Limnology Labs Winter Party 2025
The Scott, Powers, and McKindles Labs came together again to celbrate the end of the semester and have some fun. We held our second annual Lab Olympics, which included some old favorites and some new games
Undergraduate researcher Rebecca Tietze and PI Katelyn McKindles travel to Punta Arenas, Chile, to present research from the lab.
Cities like Toledo, Ohio, and Wichita Falls, Texas (not to mention Baylor’s hometown of Waco) are among the communities that are partnering with Baylor researchers like Dr. Katelyn McKindles to better understand and plan for issues affecting their water quality. Her work helps communities better understand the microscopic organisms that affect water quality, and move beyond basic testing to develop smarter, more effective treatment strategies that deliver cleaner, better tasting water to residents.
How Baylor researchers are helping improve water quality in Texas and beyond
Stephanodiscus binderanus is a bloom-forming diatom abundant in winter and persisting into spring in the Laurentian Great Lakes. Fungal parasites, especially Chytridiomycota, can suppress phytoplankton growth and alter bloom succession. To address the effects of both biotic and abiotic factors on S. binderanus in the face of a changing climate, we tested a range of temperatures (9.4–24 C) and light intensities (15, 30, 50, 100 μmol m-2s-1) on infected and uninfected cultures.
May 2025
March/April 2025 - Several Undergraduate Students participated in local opportunities to share their research projects. Both Rebecca Tietze and Leighton Petty presented at the Baylor Bears Symposium. Leighton also presented his work during URSA scholars week, alongside fellow undergradute researcher Kaveen Patel. Rebecca presented her work on sequencing 40 Microcystis isolate genomes, Leighton presented his work on identification of cyanobacteria recovered from Lake Waco sediment cores, and Kaveen presented his work on the effect of individual bacteria on the microbiome of Microcystis aeruginosa. Great job!
The McKindles Lab visits local elementary school for World Water Day (March 18, 2025)
Limnology Labs Winter Party 2024 - The Scott, Powers, and McKindles Labs all came together to celebrate the end of another semester, and to have some fun! We had our first Lab Olympics, competing in events like Microcentrifuge tube team opening, PPE relay race, and pipette tip basketball.
Nov 2024 - Undergraduate researcher, Rebecca Tietze, presented her summer work on the specificity of microcystin (mcy) primers on both microcystin-producing and microcystin-non-producing Microcystis strains. She is working with over 40 Microcystis isolates, and will continue to develop her molecular biology skills through whole genome sequencing (WGS).
