For my internship I got to work as a Junior Landscape Designer at Milosi Landscape in Nashville, Tennessee. I spent the first 5-6 weeks working on the Enhancements construction/maintenance crew, where I helped with new plant installations, replacements, repairs, drainage support, and other maintenance jobs. Working outside with the crews before transitioning to the office really opened my eyes and helped me understand how to create better designs that are less difficult to maintain. It also helped me appreciate just how much work goes into creating a new landscape and keeping it beautiful and healthy. And I got to work with a variety of people and learn a lot about them and the culture of Nashville!
Construction Enhancements/Maintenance Crew
Since I was working so much outside and my hands were usually dirty, unfortunately I wasn't able to take very many pictures of things we worked on. I did have a few opportunities to take some pictures of some really fascinating, large bugs. I thought it was really cool; some I had never seen before, and others were just wildly larger than any I have ever seen.
Office Junior Designer
For the remaining 8-9 weeks of my internship, I got to work in the office with the design team. It was there that I got to refine my skills in AutoCAD and SketchUp as I spent most of my time drafting and revising designs for the main lead designers. I even got to work on projects not normally given to interns because I was doing so well with AutoCAD! I also spent a lot of time plotting and printing base maps to scale using Adobe Acrobat DC. Besides working in the office, I got to visit some of the residential sites with the designers and on my own to take measurements and grades and conduct a site inventory and client needs analysis so that I could later create a base map.
My internship reignited a spark within me and reminded me of how passionate I am about landscaping, and even just horticulture in general. It is amazing to take someone's vision for a landscape and help them bring it into existence. At Milosi I really appreciated that they let me try a number of new things that I wanted to learn, and they also helped me get stronger with the things I was already doing well with. I loved being a part of the design team, and I hope that I can continue designing throughout the rest of my career!
